As You Age, Stretching Exercises Become More Important

March 03, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Health professionals say it is important to incorporate stretching exercises into your routine, especially the older we get as our flexibility naturally decreases. As joints become stiff, and tendons and ligaments tighten up, we become more susceptible to injuries as well as chronic pain and poor posture. In fact, studies show men’s flexibility drops sharply at around 70 years of age.

Stretching exercises are easy to learn, relatively easy to do, and should not take more than five to ten minutes. Urvashi Chogle, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, says the shoulders, hips, knees, and spine lose the most flexibility.  He explains, "This makes many everyday movements more difficult, such as reaching overhead, squatting, twisting, and bending over."

Of course before you begin any new stretching exercises, you need to consult with your healthcare provider. He or she may have suggestions on how to safely get started or direct you to your local community senior center or other organizations for classes. Additionally, the Internet has a lot of information on how seniors can improve their flexibility with stretching exercises done in a chair, standing up, or if you can, on the floor. Regardless of your level of fitness, these exercises should help improve your range of motion, flexibility and joint stiffness.

Overlooked Benefits of Assisted Living

September 14, 2022 by Rena Phillips in assisted living

Many times, a move to assisted living facilities is not only good for the senior but for the family as well. Mom or dad living alone, perhaps already experiencing a fall or another type of health emergency, is stressful for everybody involved.

Senior living experts point out the benefits of receiving attentive senior care along with services like nutritional meals, access to meaningful programs and transportation to and from appointments. At communities like MorningStar of Rio Rancho, we sit down with in-coming residents to create a Personalized Service Plan designed to help with the ADLs (activities of daily living), which include things like bathing, grooming, transferring (such as from bed to a wheelchair), feeding and toileting.

Dee Pekruhn, director of life plan communities’ services and policy for LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, says, “Whether they stand alone or are part of a larger continuing care campus, assisted living communities offer a wide variety of community and social activities.” These typically include arts and crafts, physical exercise classes such as chair yoga, live concerts and other entertainment, and educational and technology classes. At MorningStar of Rio Rancho, we tell our residents if we don’t already have a class addressing one of your interests, to start one.

Special outings and trips are another component of many senior living communities including MorningStar of Rio Rancho. Bus trips to local, scenic spots, or trips to the mall or cultural events are just some of the activities residents enjoy.

Another important service is medication management as statistics show the average older adult takes four or more prescription drugs each day, and as high as 39 percent of seniors take five or more. Medical management ensures seniors take the proper medication they need, when they need it.

MorningStar of Rio Rancho is proud to offer the finest senior housing Rio Rancho offers with our distinct mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.”  Our community offers 51 private assisted living suites and 26 suites in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Contact us to inquiry about availability, and be sure to ask about our Move-in Specials.

Compassionate, Individualized Memory Care in Happy Valley, OR

September 09, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Happy Valley offers 27 secure suites in a range of floor plans for the comprehensive care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Our home is honored to provide compassionate, individualized care for residents from the earliest stages of the disease to the most advanced.

The Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of memory care residents.  As such, it means we can encourage and support independence as much as possible and let residents move freely about their environment including an enclosed courtyard.  In fact, every aspect of our community from the physical design to a range of purposeful activities, food service, security and more offers residents a comfortable, stress-free lifestyle.

MorningStar’s holistic approach to memory care involves treating each of our residents with the respect and dignity they deserve.  Even before a resident joins our community, we meet with them and their family to find out as much as we can about their background and interests as well as personal preferences.  From there, we create an individualized care plan that takes all of this into consideration.

Most importantly we are blessed to have a team of individuals with big hearts who recognize it is a privilege to serve seniors. They enjoy listening to life stories, view family photos and make sure each one feels loved, safe, and respected. All team members, regardless of position, receive training in Radiance, which is much more than a customer service program. It is how we build a culture of consistency, authenticity and genuine concern for the needs of others and guides the way we dispense service – with sincerity, warmth and depth of purpose.

If a parent, spouse or another loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the MorningStar of Happy Valley team is here to help. Life After a Loved One’s Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

August 15, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Senior Living Communities

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is devastating news for all.  Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold.  Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you'll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.”  They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better.  Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors.  Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned.  You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day.  A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so.  Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings.  They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses.  Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

At MorningStar of Happy Valley, our goal is to provide the best senior living in the area, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our memory care residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and spend each day in an atmosphere that celebrates and elevates their lives. When Is It Time to Move a Parent to Memory Care?

May 27, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Dementia is a complicated disease that requires specialized care from trained, experienced, and dedicated staff. Despite the best intentions of family members, sometimes they are simply not equipped to provide the extensive care needed.

Memory care communities are designed to meet the needs of seniors with dementia and Alzheimers. But how do you know when it is time to transfer your loved one to memory care? These signs are strong signals that it is time to make the transition.

Safety Becomes a Concern

When seniors with dementia begin to experience symptoms daily, their safety can be in jeopardy. They may forget things like locking doors, turning off the stove, or taking medication.

If you notice your loved one forgets these important things, it is time to consider moving to a senior living community that can ensure their safety. Senior communities have dedicated staff that looks after residents to ensure they are out of harm's way.

Neglecting Personal Care

A telltale sign that your loved one with dementia requires more care is neglecting personal care. Unwashed clothes, body odor, or other personal hygiene issues can mean that your loved one forgets to care for themselves daily or has simply forgotten how to perform these tasks.

In a memory care community, your loved one will receive the daily assistance needed to ensure their personal care needs are met.

Neglecting Finances

We all may forget to pay a bill here and there at some point. But if your loved one is regularly late on bills or is receiving collection notices, it can put their financial stability at risk. In addition to issues with creditors, neglecting finances can mean that they are more susceptible to financial scams and fraud.

You Can No Longer Provide Adequate Care

It is common for family members to take on the role of caregiver for parents or loved ones with dementia. While this is a noble effort that can work in the short term, it is difficult for most people to provide adequate caregiving for the long term.

If you find yourself exhausted, neglecting yourself, or dropping the ball on caregiving duties, it is time to transition your loved one to a senior living community that can cater to their needs.

Your Loved One Is Lonely or Isolated

Seniors with dementia are more likely to develop feelings of loneliness or isolation which can make their symptoms worse and lead to feelings of depression. Loneliness and depression can also translate to negative physical symptoms.

Transitioning a loved one to a senior community will ensure that they have daily social interactions and access to activities that cater to seniors with dementia.

April 18, 2022 by Rena Phillips in senior living

MorningStar of Happy Valley offers the greater Portland, OR area unsurpassed assisted living and memory care.  Along with 61 private assisted living suites, our Reflections Neighborhood has 27 secure suites devoted to caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.   MorningStar’s memory care revolves around comforting and caring for our most tender residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages.

As dementia care specialists, we understand how devastating it is when a loved one receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another memory loss disease, and we want you to know we are here to help.  Our memory care area is in a separate wing specifically designed to allow residents the freedom to explore their expansive surroundings safely and easily.  Within the safe haven of our “Neighborhood,” we have created an environment that encourages and supports residents’ independence whenever possible.

Our holistic approach to memory care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  MorningStar leverages the power of dance, music, art, exercise, animals and aromatherapy in order to heal and comfort, and provides meaningful wellness programs and activities that engage our residents.  Also, as many adverse behaviors are often side effects from antipsychotic drugs, our goal is to have as few as possible of our residents on such drugs.

We recognize that the essence of the individual remains despite the extent of the memory loss, and that our job is to find ways to connect with and nurture it.  MorningStar’s philosophy and approach to this kind of supported living is encompassed under the breadth of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Thus, each day we strive to thoughtfully “enter, embrace and explore” the world of dementia.  Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar Senior Living, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

Help Prevent Serious Health Hazards with Medication Management

March 21, 2022 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Experts say medication management is an important preventive measure to avoid potential serious health hazards for seniors. As many older adults take multiple medications, vitamins, and supplements to treat different symptoms and health conditions, they are at a greater risk for medication mix-ups. Researchers estimate that 25 percent of people ages 65 to 69 take at least five prescription drugs to treat chronic conditions, a figure that jumps to nearly 46 percent for those between 70 and 79.

Polypharmacy is the regular use of five or more prescription medications, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report approximately 350,000 people are hospitalized each year due to adverse, or harmful, drug events. While these episodes are usually preventable, doctors acknowledge it can be confusing keeping track of daily dosages and special instructions such as to take with or without food or the time of day, etc.

If an elderly parent or grandparent is taking several medications, healthcare providers say it is a good idea to inquire about their medication management. One sign they may not be organized is if they have medications stored in different locations throughout the house, and old, outdated prescriptions are mixed in with current ones. You can start by gathering all medications in one place, remember it is best to store them in a cool, dry location, and set aside any outdated medications for proper disposal. Write down the names of the drugs, dosages, and if they see several doctors, who prescribed them. Also, include herbal supplements, multi-vitamins and over-the-counter drugs. Bring the list to the next visit to their primary care physician and ask why mom or dad is taking it, how long they will be on it, and do any medications present a dangerous interaction with another drug they are on.

MorningStar of Happy Valley is a beautiful senior living community offering assisted living and memory care.  From healthy daily meals to wellness programs and activities, we have a whole range of services and resort-style amenities to ensure residents’ comfort and wellbeing.  Our care services include care managers, access to licensed nurses, and medication care managers.  Please see our website for more information.

Are You at Increased Risk of Heart Disease?

February 14, 2022 by Rena Phillips in assisted living

The CDC says February is American Heart Month, making it the time to focus on cardiovascular disease. Focusing on heart disease is important as it is the leading cause of death in the US for both men and women; and the awareness campaign helps people to realize it is largely preventable. Experts stress that every adult should be aware of their risk and know the healthy choices to make to reduce their chance of heart disease including coronary heart disease, which is the primary cause of heart attacks.

The NIH explains your risk of heart disease is higher if you:

  • Have high blood pressure

  • Have high blood cholesterol

  • Are overweight or obese

  • Have prediabetes or diabetes

  • Smoke

  • Do not get regular physical activity

  • Have a family history of early heart disease (your father or brother was diagnosed before age 55, or your mother or sister was diagnosed before age 65)

  • Have a history of preeclampsia (a sudden rise in blood pressure and too much protein in the urine during pregnancy)

  • Have unhealthy eating behaviors

  • Are older (age 55 or older for women or age 45 or older for men)

Experts say for each risk you have, the higher your overall risk is for heart disease. While some risks cannot be helped such as your gender, age and family history, it is important to discuss with your healthcare provider what you can do to reduce your risk. Also the NIH says it can be helpful to join #OurHearts in Action, a group designed to encourage and motivate heart-healthy behaviors together.

At the MorningStar of Happy Valley senior living community, we offer 61 private assisted living suites and another 27 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of those with memory impairment. Our mission is to enhance quality of life for residents and we do this through a full component of wellness programs and activities, hospitality and care services, and luxury amenities. Be an Active Partner in Your Medical Care

January 10, 2022 by Rena Phillips in senior living

A National Institute of Health survey found patients who were most satisfied with their healthcare were those engaged in self-advocacy. This included a person becoming knowledgeable about their injury and health care needs; and being persistent about speaking up for those needs. The NIH also explains those who felt better about their experience practiced communication skills, were organized, talked to peer mentors and kept a positive attitude.

Research shows practicing self-advocacy, or when a family member actively advocates on the behalf of a loved one, reduces medical errors in hospital settings, doctors’ offices or at the pharmacy. It is important as the World Health Organization reports “an estimated 10% of patients in high-income countries are harmed while receiving hospital care.” Also according to a 2021 report in StatPearls, “medical errors result in about 100,000 deaths in hospitals and clinics annually.”

Most errors are related to diagnoses, prescriptions and use of medicines; and misdiagnoses means delayed treatment and taking the wrong medicines. To ensure the best care you need to be honest with your healthcare provider. This includes providing an account of your symptoms and a list of current prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbs, supplements and vitamins you take. Be sure to let them know if you have any drug allergies and provide as complete a medical history as you can including your personal medical record as well as that of your family’s. In addition let your medical team know if you are a smoker and the amount of alcohol you consume.

Additionally remember the time you spend with your doctor is short, so prepare beforehand the things you wish to discuss. The Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore has a QuestionBuilder app available by AHRQ at Google Play or the Apple store to guide you in questions you should ask.

Experts also say to remember you and your doctor are a team. Being your own health advocate or that of a loved one means helping them follow the medical advice recommended by the doctor regarding diet, rest, exercise, smoking and alcohol use and taking meds as prescribed.

If you are looking for senior living, please visit MorningStar of Happy Valley. We provide area seniors trusted assisted living and memory care with a wide array of amenities, care services and wellness programs and activities. Please visit our website.

Assisted Living Provides the Care Required to Enhance Quality of Life

December 02, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living, assisted living

A Place for Mom’s website, a free service that helps families in their senior care search, reports the various services offered at assisted living communities can make it a healthier, safer living option for many seniors. As services typically involve 24/7 care, nutritional meals and wellness programs, it means residents receive the kind of care required to enhance their quality of life.

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Rio Rancho provide the social connections necessary to seniors’ wellbeing as well as intellectual stimulation. The individual and their family get peace of mind knowing help is available when it is needed. Likewise, recent research shows assisted living communities may help seniors avoid falls as most are equipped with safety features such as handicap-accessible bathrooms and wheelchair accessible doorways. MorningStar’s emergency call systems in each suite also means immediate help is at hand.

MorningStar of Rio Rancho offers seniors assistance with another all-too common problem of medication mismanagement. The JAMA Internal Medicine journal published a study showing “80% of older adults regularly take at least two prescription medications, and 36% regularly take at least five prescription drugs.” The Department of Health and Human Services reports up to 55 percent of older adults are “non-compliant” in their medications including skipping doses or failing to take medication as prescribed. Either one can result in hospitalizations or deaths. Our medication management service helps to avoid these problems and includes dispensing as well as ordering prescription drugs.

MorningStar’s comprehensive care starts with residents having an individualized plan created to address their specialized needs. It is frequently reviewed and updated as required. Our day-to-day care is intended to help residents maintain a healthier lifestyle with nutritional meals, exercise classes, and life enrichment programs designed for their needs. For exceptional senior housing, Rio Rancho, NM seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar, a true destination for successful aging.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior housing Rio Rancho, NM offers. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Dining at the Reflections Neighborhood at MorningStar of Rio Rancho

April 30, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

MorningStar’s goal is to provide the best senior living Rio Rancho, NM offers, which includes compassionate memory care for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Starting with the actual physical design right through to our holistic, compassionate care, every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to provide the best for our most tender residents including our food service.

Many individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease have trouble using a fork and knife to eat with, which is why many memory care homes resort to serving finger foods like chicken nuggets, fish sticks, french fries and purees.  The problem with this is while the food may be easy to eat; it is not very nutritional and lacks variety.

This is why the MorningStar communities have modified our memory care food service to one that avoids overly processed meals, and is both tasty and nutritional.  Our menus consist of foods like pastas and other edible items wrapped in puff pastry sheets, egg roll wrappers and turnovers that are easy for residents to pick up and eat.

Our Chef also utilizes techniques such as mixing and molding soft, pureed food to resemble its pre-blended form. For example, residents might be served something that looks like blueberry French toast but is really a French toast puree that has been shaped and molded with binding agents.  Also in normal times, we routinely welcome families to come and join us for a meal, and hopefully will be able to resume this tradition soon.

We want you to know that our entire team is honored to walk alongside the memory-impaired (and their families) on this unexpected journey.  As dementia specialists, we recognize that the essence of the person still exists – our job is to find ways to connect with that essence regardless of the level of memory loss. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior housing Rio Rancho, NM has to offer. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, MorningStar of Rio Rancho provides outstanding assisted living and memory care.

Senior Living is a Great Way to Combat Loneliness

April 28, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost one-third of all seniors live by themselves. In terms of numbers, that’s an estimated 13.8 million seniors. Experts say living alone doesn’t necessarily mean an individual is lonely but it often is the case. Not to mention, the pandemic certainly made matters worse as many seniors self-isolated from family and friends.

Whatever the cause of loneliness, research shows it takes a toll on people. In fact a study from Brigham Young University reports loneliness can be as deadly as smoking or obesity. Study authors explain senior isolation “may complicate existing conditions, encourage an unhealthy lifestyle, and affect cognition.”

The American Psychiatric Association says seniors who report feelings of loneliness are more susceptible to depression and poor health habits including excessive drinking, smoking and lack of exercise. Research from the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging found the “risk of Alzheimer’s nearly doubled in lonely adults, and mental decline was faster.”

Senior living communities like MorningStar of Happy Valley provide residents a lifestyle that focuses on wellness, comfort and community. Along with extensive care services, we offer a broad range of wellness programs and activities designed to enhance physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social connectivity. Programs range from physical exercise classes to art classes, trivia and card games, bingo, clubs and more. We tell residents if we do not offer something you wish to pursue, start a club and encourage others to join.

Assisted living residents receive a range of services such as 24/7 care managers, certified med care managers and scheduled health & wellness evaluations. A licensed nurse is onsite during week days and on-call 24/7. Furthermore MorningStar helps families arrange auxiliary care services to deal with other health concerns on an as needed basis.

We believe every moment you are alive is an opportunity to grow, set new goals, dream new dreams, and do better. MorningStar of Happy Valley is committed to excellence and helping seniors have better lives. Visit our website for more information on trusted assisted living and memory care in Happy Valley, OR.

Why Senior Living May Be More Affordable than You Thought

April 18, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

After the past year, a lot of seniors are ready to make a lifestyle change. Experiencing firsthand how short life really is and realizing each day is precious, many now wish to make the most of their retirement years and live life to the fullest.

If you are a senior or the family of one who could benefit from getting help with daily personal care, you may want to consider assisted living. Today, most communities are designed to enhance a senior’s quality of life and to help maintain their independence, not take it away. At MorningStar of Happy Valley, we explain it as “getting a little help from your friends.”

A Place for Mom’s website cautions many families suffer from “stick shock” when they first see the cost of an assisted living community. However the reality is it may be less expensive or right on par with what a family is already paying for mom or dad to live in their own home.

Studies show once you add up all of the expenses of running your own household such as property taxes, utilities, car payments, insurance, HOA dues, Internet service, cable, repairs and home maintenance, most of these expenses are included in the monthly costs for assisted living. Now consider what you pay for in-home care, meals, transportation, housekeeping, and 24/7 on-call emergency alerts. Again these costs are included in the monthly fee at MorningStar of Happy Valley.

We cannot forget to add in the invaluable peace of mind seniors and their families have knowing help is at hand whenever they need it. As a resident of Happy Valley, entertainment is provided with wellness programs and activities and special events as well as scheduled outings and transportation services. Built-in companionship and predictable budgeting make it easy to enjoy stress-free retirement years.

The MorningStar of Happy Valley senior living community is located in the southeastern suburb of Portland, OR. Warm and welcoming, our three-story,83,000-square-foot community offers 61 luxury, private assisted living suites and 27 secure memory care suites for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
