Spending Thanksgiving with Your Senior Parent

November 25, 2022 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday to slow down and spend some quality time with your senior parent. Whether your parents are living independently or in assisted living, holidays are especially important, and Thanksgiving is often a time they look forward to.

If you are planning Thanksgiving this year, take some time to think about the best ways to accommodate everyone in your family. This article will discuss a few things to keep in mind for spending Thanksgiving with your senior parent.

Make It Convenient and Comfortable

Thanksgiving should be about traditions, enjoying food, and spending time together. There’s no need to overdo it. Aim to create a convenient and comfortable environment so that your senior parent can enjoy themselves the entire day.

Thanksgiving should not be a pain or a stressful event, so keep it simple if you can. If your parents are senior living in Rio Rancho, think about moving the meal to them to save them travel time.

Carve Out Time for Family

With the business of the holiday season, it can be easy to get caught up in everything that needs to be done. Don’t let yourself become too busy that you don’t stop to take quality time with the ones you love.

Make sure that your Thanksgiving schedule has some downtime, so your senior parent has the time they need to catch up with everyone in the family.

Make the Menu Together

If you are hosting Thanksgiving, give your senior parent an opportunity to help out. That could mean help with cooking the meal or deciding what to put on the menu. Even seniors with limited mobility or health challenges can contribute to the family meal.

Your senior parent has probably attended or hosted many Thanksgivings in their lifetime, so take advantage of their knowledge and wisdom.

Don’t Forget About Nutrition

Thanksgiving is a meal for indulging, but that doesn’t mean nutrition has to go out the window. Nutrition is especially important for seniors, and every meal should include at least some nutritious food.

You can easily incorporate healthy foods like vegetables into your meal. Your senior parent can enjoy all the turkey they want as well as a serving or two of healthy food.

Make This Thanksgiving Special

The most important part of Thanksgiving is spending time together as a family. For your senior parent in assisted living, there may not be many holidays each year where everyone comes together, so make the most of it. Ensure that your senior parent is included in the planning and that they have ample time to spend with the family.

With a bit of thoughtfulness, you can make this Thanksgiving special for your senior parent.

Each aspect of our home is intended to allow residents to comfortably and safely age in place with an array of luxury amenities, care services and wellness programs and activities.

Our gracious living extends to our dining service that offers an upscale experience characterized by diverse dishes showcasing creativity and personal tastes, and inspired by the belief that dining is the centerpiece of personal wellness. It is through a proper diet of healthy choices that food becomes a healing medicine unlike any other. When it is enjoyed as a community, it helps to bond us as a family. MorningStar of Happy Valley’s trained Executive Chef has been instructed in culinary skills and menu creation, along with the soft skills of being a servant-leader. As we recognize today’s seniors have more sophisticated culinary tastes, we balance a blend of world foods and flavors with nostalgic comfort foods.

One of our special interests is a focus on developing delicious meals around foods known to support brain health. Containing a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, they include “Super Foods” like acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and dark greens. So our meals not only delight the eye and palate, but contain the ingredients to help recharge our bodies.

Assisted Living Provides the Care Required to Enhance Quality of Life

December 02, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living, assisted living

A Place for Mom’s website, a free service that helps families in their senior care search, reports the various services offered at assisted living communities can make it a healthier, safer living option for many seniors. As services typically involve 24/7 care, nutritional meals and wellness programs, it means residents receive the kind of care required to enhance their quality of life.

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Rio Rancho provide the social connections necessary to seniors’ wellbeing as well as intellectual stimulation. The individual and their family get peace of mind knowing help is available when it is needed. Likewise, recent research shows assisted living communities may help seniors avoid falls as most are equipped with safety features such as handicap-accessible bathrooms and wheelchair accessible doorways. MorningStar’s emergency call systems in each suite also means immediate help is at hand.

MorningStar of Rio Rancho offers seniors assistance with another all-too common problem of medication mismanagement. The JAMA Internal Medicine journal published a study showing “80% of older adults regularly take at least two prescription medications, and 36% regularly take at least five prescription drugs.” The Department of Health and Human Services reports up to 55 percent of older adults are “non-compliant” in their medications including skipping doses or failing to take medication as prescribed. Either one can result in hospitalizations or deaths. Our medication management service helps to avoid these problems and includes dispensing as well as ordering prescription drugs.

MorningStar’s comprehensive care starts with residents having an individualized plan created to address their specialized needs. It is frequently reviewed and updated as required. Our day-to-day care is intended to help residents maintain a healthier lifestyle with nutritional meals, exercise classes, and life enrichment programs designed for their needs. For exceptional senior housing, Rio Rancho, NM seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar, a true destination for successful aging.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior housing Rio Rancho, NM offers. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, MorningStar of Rio Rancho provides outstanding assisted living and memory care.

A Positive Attitude Toward Aging May Help You Live Longer

August 31, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Ageism is defined as a prejudice or discrimination against a particular age-group, especially the elderly; and can have detrimental impact on seniors so reports a 2002 Yale University study. In fact researchers found “age discrimination actually has the potential power to shorten senior’s lives.” Study participants were 50 years and older and periodically interviewed regarding their views on aging. Participants with more positive views on aging lived 7.5 years longer than the group who viewed themselves as burdens to others and felt their life was less valuable. Researchers say a negative attitude on aging increases a senior’s risk for depression and social isolation.

Another study done in 2019 found positive thinking leads to an 11-15% longer lifespan and a greater chance of living to age 85 and older. Researchers say the results remained consistent after age, gender and income as well as depression and health status were taken into consideration. Positive attitudes on aging may even improve people’s resiliency toward illness and give them a greater will to live.

One way to improve your outlook on life and develop a more positive attitude is to practice positive affirmations. It is recommended you keep an affirmation based in reality and repeat it several times each day. It can be something as simple as repeating “you can handle whatever life brings your way,” or a more loving-kindness meditation such as “I am happy.”  Other studies show it is important to surround yourself with positive thinkers as negativity can be catchy.

At MorningStar of Happy Valley, our welcoming senior living community was designed from the ground up to be a place where residents are proud to call it “home.” The three-story building offers 61 assisted living suites in a variety of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans from 324 sq. ft. to as large as 928 sq. ft. In addition we have 27 secure suites dedicated to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Please visit our website for contact information, to see our floor plans, discover our many amenities and learn about our care services.

December 20, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

The moment you step inside the MorningStar of Happy Valley’s gorgeous assisted living and memory care community you are sure to feel right at home.  In fact we have gotten used to hearing the surprise in visitors’ voices as they express their delight with our warm, welcoming atmosphere.  Moreover while you are sure to be impressed with our architectural design, we can guarantee that once you meet our staff, you will be most impressed with their kindness and compassion.

From the top down, MorningStar of Happy Valley is run by a team of individuals who lead by example.  Starting with Executive Director, Tiana Jackson, who has been with Happy Valley since our opening just a little over a year ago, she has demonstrated true grit, determination and a loving spirit in helping our community get through the pandemic.  Ms. Jackson has worn many hats during the last year as she has stepped in where there was a need in a role as Nail Technician, Hairstylist and Dog Walker during these uncertain times.

Tiana cites her former colleague Dee as the person who has most influenced her during her long career in senior care.  She explains that Dee’s passion, respect, model of servant-leadership has not only motivated her but shaped her. She adds that she has also met “many spectacular seniors who have taught me many life lessons through their stories.”

Tsering Yandon, who serves as our Wellness Director, explains that she cared for her Popo (“lovely grandfather”) who suffered from dementia for five years.  She states that as tough as that was, it brought her tremendous joy.  Tsering adds, “To have been able to serve him until the end of his life is something I cherish. And it contributes to my call to serve other seniors as well.”

Director of Community Relations, Shannon Calles explains that seniors have taught her by example with their 50-, 60-, 75-year marriages, that she needs to work at being in the ‘No Matter What’ club with her husband. Shannon says, “The storm always passes and there I want us to be, together in the end. That’s the story I want in my book.”

Our beautiful community offers 61 graciously appointed suites for assisted living with configurations that include spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans (some as large as 865 square feet). In our Reflections Neighborhood, we offer 27 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please visit our website to learn more about our loving home.

Trusted Assisted Living & Memory Care in Happy Valley, Oregon

June 24, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

The MorningStar story began with a vision from our Founder/CEO, Ken Jaeger, who wanted to re-create senior housing that was defined by the human touch and felt much like his grandmother’s house – “a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”   Out of this loving concept that focuses on the power of relationships, came three mission statements upon which MorningStar was founded: Honor God in our business practices and relationships; Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals;  and Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.

Following these precepts, MorningStar of Happy Valley is committed to providing residents with a lifestyle of comfort and wellness with a care team that feels honored to serve seniors.  Our beautiful community offers a choice of 61 well-appointed, private assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 27 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment.

While the country slowly gets back to normal and continues to reopen, we want you to know that MorningStar of Happy Valley will still be closely following—in many cases, exceeding—guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), American Senior Housing Association and Federal government.  This includes prohibiting non-essential visitors and vendors from entering our community. Also all team members who interact with residents must follow strict protocols regarding hygiene and protection, and we will continue the daily screening of staff for symptoms and prevent those who are ill from coming to work.

Currently we are safely accepting new residents; however it is being done in conjunction with a thorough screening process.  New residents move directly into their private suite, where they will remain for a 14-day quarantine period; and staff entering the room will wear full personal protective equipment.

Remember our first commitment is to the safety of all those in our care.  Listen to what one resident’s daughter writes about her experience, “Although it is difficult not being able to visit our loved ones, I am so grateful for the proactive stand you are taking. Our parents could not be in a better place.”

MorningStar of Happy Valley offers the very best in senior care within a beautiful, serene setting.  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Please give us a call or visit our website to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care community.

Senior’s Legal Issues May Require a Specialized Attorney

April 05, 2020 by Rena Phillips

There are some legal problems unique to older adults that many attorneys are not equipped to provide accurate advice about such as Medicaid, Social Security or disability claims, trusts or estate planning, or issues regarding long term care.  When an elderly person requires the services of an attorney to protect their financial interests or to solve legal issues, experts recommend hiring an elder law attorney who specializes in advocating for the elderly and their loved ones.

The FindLaw website explains, “Most elder law attorneys handle a wide range of legal matters affecting an older or disabled person, including issues related to health care, long term care planning, guardianship, retirement, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and other important matters.”  However, remember that as with all attorneys, elder law attorneys also specialize in specific areas of the law so look for one that has the expertise you need.

Many families find it makes good sense to hire an elder attorney to protect and preserve their loved one’s assets when they sell their home to move into an assisted living or memory care community.  This is a case where you would want to find one that specializes in financial and estate planning.  The elder attorney also can assist with legal issues that arise with the actual care of the senior including helping to sort out supplemental and long-term health insurance problems.

An elder attorney can draw up a durable power of attorney as well as draft a living will, living trust or other advance directives, or set up conservatorships and guardianships.  They can help answer questions regarding nursing home resident rights and other patient rights'.

To find an elder law attorney, experts recommend asking friends, family members or other business connections for referrals.  Findlaw.com says you can check online and read through websites or use their online attorney directory.

MorningStar at Englefield Green brings a unique vision to senior living with our mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. We are dedicated to creating a true home within an ideal setting and invite you to schedule a tour to see firsthand our exceptional memory care.

Driving Safety as You Age

December 24, 2019 by Rena Phillips

Older drivers can still be good, safe drivers, but there are some things to consider both for your safety and the safety of others.  The Mayo Clinic recommends that seniors stay as active as possible in their day-to-day life which helps to maintain overall strength, flexibility, and range of motion.  Drivers need to be able to turn and look over their shoulder and move their head with ease. They must be able to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and legs need to be strong enough to apply pressure to the gas pedal or brake.

A senior’s peripheral vision can decrease with age or from certain medications and other eye problems may cause drivers to have trouble seeing in the dark or experience blurred vision.  Hearing problems can interfere with detecting sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles or approaching cars. Be vigilant about scheduling vision and hearing tests regularly as part of your wellness care and follow your doctor’s advice as to how often they should be done.  Many problems can be corrected if caught early enough.

Remember that certain medications can cause drowsiness so make sure you know the side effects of your prescription drugs and do not drive if you are feeling sleepy.  It may be a good idea to limit trips in the car to daylight hours and when the weather is good. Keep in mind that a person’s reaction time slows with age as do their motor skills.  You may need to re-evaluate your driving every so few months, especially if you find yourself having incidences of accidents that almost happen.

The MedicineNet website has some safe driving tips for seniors:

Planning before you leave:

  • Plan to drive on streets you know.

  • Limit your trips to places that are easy to get to and close to home.

  • Take routes that let you avoid risky spots like ramps and left turns.

  • Add extra time for travel if driving conditions are bad.

  • Don't drive when you are stressed or tired.

While you are driving:

  • Always wear your seat belt.

  • Stay off the cell phone.

  • Avoid distractions such as listening to the radio or having conversations.

  • Leave a big space, at least two car lengths, between your car and the one in front of you. If you are driving at higher speeds or if the weather is bad, leave even more space between you and the next car.

  • Make sure there is enough space behind you. (Hint: if someone follows you too closely, slow down so that the person will pass you.)

  • Use your rear window defroster to keep the back window clear at all times.

  • Keep your headlights on at all times.

MorningStar of Rio Rancho’s Signature WellStar Program

October 25, 2019 by Rena Phillips

MorningStar of Rio Rancho lovingly provides our residents the amenities and services to ensure their comfort and to make them feel right at home.  We also provide a range of activities including our creative and enriching WellStar program consisting of five wellness components – physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, and food philosophy.  Designed to help seniors stay active, engaged and productive, the program integrates different modalities and senses for both the body and the mind.

Introduced by our Life Enrichment coordinator, the activities tap into the unique talents and experiences of our residents and includes encouraging residents to start and lead special interest clubs themselves.  Along with recognizing a range of capabilities and a variety of interests, the goal of our activities is to elevate the mood of our residents, reduce pain, and help them to rely less on medications.

We know that physical exercise is imperative to seniors’ health and we offer a variety of activities for our residents’ enjoyment.  In addition, meeting the spiritual needs of our residents is also important to their wellbeing, which is why a chapel, open to all faiths, is an integral part of our community.  We also offer intellectual wellness with entertaining daily doses of challenging brain games designed to practice cognitive skills and introduce new ideas. In addition to all of this, is a natural, welcoming atmosphere that encourages socializing and helps to strengthen the bonds of our community.

Last but not least our wellness program includes serving residents healthy, nutritional food.  This is why we have an Executive Chef on staff who prepares the tasty meals that are served in our beautiful dining room restaurant style.

What sets us apart from other senior housing Rio Rancho offers?  One thing is the fact that our entire team works to build a true community and our WellStar programs exemplify that philosophy. Please visit our website for more information and to schedule a tour.

Many are Surprised at the Value of Assisted Living Communities

September 30, 2019 by Rena Phillips

According to a survey conducted by Genworth Financial in 2018 the median monthly cost for an assisted living community is $4000 (costs vary depending on the community) – totaling $48,000 annually.  In comparison, the median cost of long-term care by a home health aide is $4,195 monthly or $50,336 annually.

The fact that many assisted living communities are actually less expensive than seniors choosing to live in their own home and bring in a team of caregivers to provide the services they need surprises many people.  The reason for this is so many of the services a senior pays separately for to stay at home are included in the cost of assisted living.

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Happy Valley eliminate the cost of such things as property taxes, property insurance, condominium maintenance fees, and 24-hour security. You no longer need to pay for lawn mowing, snow removal, and other repair and replacement costs.  Also, as a resident of MorningStar, you will no longer need to buy groceries and prepare meals as we take care of food prep and serve three daily meals restaurant-style. Moreover each suite is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system, and light housekeeping and daily trash removal are part of our services.

Other features offered by many assisted living communities including MorningStar of Happy Valley are free entertainment and ready-made socializing.  With a wide selection of wellness programs, activities, and special events and outings, residents at our community can stay as busy as they like.   In addition, onsite amenities such as a general store, movie theatre, chapel, fitness room, library with a computer, and more adds to the convenience as well as the value assisted living communities can offer.

Opening in late 2019, MorningStar of Happy Valley will have 61 private assisted living suites and 27 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  We are committed to provide the best assisted living in the area, and encourage you to set up a tour to see our model suites.

MorningStar of Happy Valley represents the finest in senior living with our distinct mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we are honored to create a true “home” for residents.  Contact us to learn more about exceptional assisted living in the Happy Valley – Clackamas area.

Does Your Parent Need More Help with Daily Living?

September 30, 2019 by Rena Phillips

Adult children are often surprised to discover that a parent is not doing well and that they may require additional assistance to ensure their continued safety and comfort.  According to the experts, there are several sign to look for to help determine if assisted living is the right answer for your mom or dad.

The website Caring.com recommends that you consider assisted living if your elderly parent has recently experienced a fall or has had a medical emergency and did not receive the immediate help they required.  Also it may be time to think about it if they suffer from chronic health problems that are getting progressively worse such as COPD, congestive heart failure or dementia?  Furthermore, do they take a long time to recover from an illness?

Other indications that your loved one is not getting the care they need at home are signs of weight loss and a more frail appearance or if they are neglecting their personal hygiene and are not as well-groomed as they used to be?  It may simply be that preparing meals and taking care of day-to-day personal activities have become too difficult for them. An empty refrigerator, stacks of unopened mail, and new dents in the car could all be warning signs that your parent would benefit from having more assistance.

Another advantage to assisted living is that it can also provide your loved one with social activities and companionship.  Often seniors live alone, and as many stop driving, they do not get out on their own. Assisted living communities provide seniors with an opportunity to live comfortably and securely as well as to enjoy a range of activities and the company of others.  We encourage you to plan a visit to MorningStar to discover our exceptional senior living in Rio Rancho NM.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Rio Rancho, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents within a beautiful setting.  Please contact us to learn more about the finest senior living in Rio Rancho NM.

MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Rio Rancho opened its doors with an Inaugural Reception that included plenty of pomp and ceremony on July 11th.  On our website, you will find a picture of the ribbon cutting by first depositor Wendy Alguero (with daughter Vicenta and son Andre), Shannon Barker, Executive Director, Founder/CEO Ken Jaeger and Mayor Greg Hull.  The 150 attendees enjoyed a tour of MorningStar’s newest community in Rio Rancho, NM, a northern suburb of Albuquerque.

If a parent or loved one would benefit from the care and the many amenities and services assisted living offers but are reluctant to make a change in their current situation, please visit MorningStar’s Family Resource link to our helpful “Decision Guide.”   We know that while it is a good thing to have the various senior living options available today, it can lead to confusion and our Decision Guide helps to clarify them.

One of the first tips in the guide is to clearly identify what you are trying to solve in terms of your parent’s comfort, wellbeing and safety.  We recommend doing this with an eye to not just next year, but to the next 5-10 years. If you are new to the concept of assisted living, it is a relatively new idea that first emerged in the late 1990s, and provides a refreshing change from nursing homes of old that were often institutional and depressing.

For additional help with starting a conversation on senior living, request a copy of “Senior Life: How to have the Best Conversation Ever with Your Elder Parent” from us.  It provides a thorough explanation of the relational and psychological constructs of aging and legacy.

Please give us a call or use our online form to set up a tour if you or a loved one requires a little help with daily personal care activities and would benefit from companionship and the stimulation of our wellness programs and activities.  MorningStar of Rio Rancho is committed to providing the best senior housing Rio Rancho NM has to offer, and we look forward to meeting you.

MorningStar of Rio Rancho represents the finest in senior living with our distinct mission statement – “to honor, to value, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents within a beautiful setting.  Please contact us to learn more about the best senior housing Rio Rancho NM offers.

It’s Never Too Late to Benefit from Exercise

August 27, 2019 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Too many seniors feel it is a waste of time to start exercising as it won’t do them any good and may actually harm them or that they cannot do it due to physical limitations.  In fact, the U.S. National Library of Medicine published a report that found about 67 percent of older adults are sedentary for at least 8.5 hours each day, which strongly suggests a need to improve activity levels for senior health.  Experts explain there are many unexpected benefits that can be gained from regular physical exercise regardless of your age or fitness level.

One benefit as reported by the National Council for Medicine is exercise is one of the “most crucial options for arthritis management.”  In addition to lubricating the joints, it helps to reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Regular exercise can also help seniors lose weight.  This is important as obesity is a risk factor for arthritis as well as type II diabetes and other medical conditions.

Other studies seem to suggest exercise may lessen your chance of getting cancer including data that found women who perform moderate to regular exercise may “have shown a 30 to 40 percent reduction in breast cancer risk.”  Another study indicates exercise may also slow the effects of dementia.  It reported a “37 percent reduced risk and a 66 percent reduction in risk of dementia when older adults performed moderate-intensity exercise suggesting every adult ought to exercise to help lower the risk of mental decline and to help prevent mental disability later in life.”

MorningStar of Happy Valley also recognizes the importance of older adults living a healthy lifestyle.  When our assisted living and memory care community opens at the end of the year, we will offer an array of services and wellness programs along with healthy daily meals that are designed to ensure our residents’ comfort and wellbeing.  Please visit our website to learn more, or stop by our onsite Information Center.

Please consult your health care provider before starting any new physical activity.

MorningStar of Fountain Hills Proudly Welcomes Vets

August 11, 2019 by Rena Phillips in senior living

MorningStar of Fountain Hills is pleased to provide families with ideas for additional financial solutions beyond traditional retirement savings and investment income to help pay for assisted living or memory care.  On our website, you will find extensive information on several under-utilized financial benefits and resources including a full explanation of the generous “Aid & Attendance” pension from the US Department of Veteran Affairs.

Aid & Attendance is a monthly benefit payment available to certain wartime veterans and their survivors who qualify for financial need and have a doctor’s order for regular assistance with daily living activities.  To be eligible, the vet must have served for at least 90 days of active duty with at least one of those days spent serving during a period of a foreign war. Furthermore, the vet cannot have been dishonorably discharged.  The benefit does not require the vet to have served overseas, seen combat or retired from the military. Surviving spouses of the vet are also eligible for the Aid & Attendance pension if they were married to the vet at the time of their death and have not remarried.

When we find out that a vet or the family of a vet is interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to local resources that can help to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.  In every state including Arizona, there is a Department of Military/Veteran Affairs staffed with Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) who will help you complete the 41-page Aid & Attendance application free of charge. The approval process typically takes 3 to 4 months.

Throughout our many MorningStar’s communities, we are privileged to have veterans from all five branches of military service call us home.  Please visit our website and take a look at our Family Resources information regarding ways to finance assisted living including “Aid & Attendance” pension benefits for Veterans.

MorningStar of Fountain Hills’ unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior communities. Committed to creating a true home for residents within a gorgeous setting, our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve. We invite you to schedule a visit to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care.

Seniors and Bruising

March 28, 2019 by Rena Phillips

Is frequent bruising indicative of a bigger problem?  Most likely not says the Mayo Clinic because as we age people bruise more easily.  The reason for this is older skin is thinner and has lost some of its fatty layers that used to work as a cushion to protect blood vessels from injury.  Also women are more prone to bruising than men.

The medical term for a bruise is contusion, and is typically caused when small blood vessels near the skin’s surface are ruptured by an impact from an injury or a blow to the area.  This causes blood to start leaking out of the vessels and create the visible black-and-blue mark (ecchymosis) of a bruise. As the body reabsorbs the blood, the bruise begins to heal.

The Mayo Clinic says that certain medications can cause bruising such as aspirin and anticoagulants such as Coumadin® that thin the blood and reduces its ability to clot.  This means that “bleeding from capillary damage might take longer than usual to stop — which allows enough blood to leak out and cause a bruise.” Dietary supplements like fish oil and ginkgo have a blood thinning effect that can also increase the risk for bruising.

However bruising can sometimes be a sign of serious medical conditions such as low levels or abnormally functioning platelets.  They can also indicate problems with the proteins that help to clot blood. The Mayo Clinic recommends consulting your doctor if large bruises appear on your body, if they are painful, or you start bruising after beginning a new medication. Additionally check with your doctor if a bruise increases in size and becomes swollen and hard as it may be a hematoma, a localized collection of blood which becomes clotted or partially clotted.

To prevent bruising, Dr. Aarthi Anand, a board certified geriatrician and family medicine practitioner, suggests removing furniture and other obstacles to create a clear path throughout the home to avoid bumps and falls.  If you or your loved one is unsteady on their feet, install handrails when possible and consider using a walker or cane.

Walking is Great Exercise for Seniors

March 20, 2019 by Rena Phillips in senior living

For many of us in Arizona, it is a welcome relief from the summer heat to be able to get outside and enjoy the milder weather. One of the best forms of exercising for seniors is walking, and experts says it offers benefits ranging from controlling blood sugar, supporting bone and heart health to improving sleep. However there are a few precautions you should take before starting your walk.

As many older adults have balance issues, a loss of feeling in their legs and feet, or feet that routinely swell, you need to wear supportive and comfortable walking shoes to help reduce the risk of a fall. Shoes should be wide-mouthed so they are easy to put on and have laces that allow them to be adjusted to fit. In addition an orthopedic insert can provide ergonomic support to the feet and ankle without being uncomfortable.

When buying shoes, be sure to look for a hard, slip-resistant sole that firmly grips the surface, even in wet, slippery conditions. A shock-absorbing and light-weight sole will offer a softer impact on the ankles and the heels.

Additionally your shoes should not increase pain in the feet or cause blisters or sores. Another tip is to not wear worn-out shoes, flip flops or other open shoes as they do not give enough support to the ankle and make it easier to fall. Experts also recommend buying shoes in a wider width as they offer better stability and can accommodate your feet if they tend to swell.

Remember also to drink plenty of water. Dehydration can lead to serious complications including increasing the risk of falls. At MorningStar of Fountain Hills, our residents have plenty of opportunity to get outside and enjoy the weather as we have a fireside patio and porches. We also offer exercise classes which are geared to improving balance which increases mobility and reduces the risk of falls.
