Superfoods Make Meals Healthier & Tasty

May 27, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

While nutritionists are quick to point out the best diet is to choose healthy options from across all food groups (paying attention to calorie limits), they say superfoods deserve special recognition. This is due to the fact they contain “some very important nutrients that can power-pack your meals and snacks, and further enhance a healthy eating pattern.” Research has shown a healthy diet can lessen our risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers; and superfoods make it that much easier to do.

Superfoods include richly colored, sweet berries high in antioxidants, which are known to help fight off diseases. Experts say frozen berries are as good for us as fresh ones and are a good alternative off-season. Several types of fish high in omega-3 fatty acids fall into the superfood category and include salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, trout and anchovies.

Various nuts are on the list but dieticians warn they are calorically dense so don’t eat too many at one time. Almonds, pecans, walnuts and hazelnuts are all high in protein as well as monounsaturated fats found to help reduce heart disease. Olive oil is considered a heart healthy oil and is a good source of vitamin E, polyphenols, and monounsaturated fatty acids. Other superfoods are legumes, cruciferous vegetables, and yogurt.

At MorningStar of Happy Valley, we offer 61 graciously-appointed suites for assisted living with a choice of floorplans ranging from spacious studios to one- and two bedroom apartments. Our resort-style amenities include a 5-star all-day food service largely prepared from scratch, with daily and weekly specials as well as a la carte items. Nutritional choices include low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat making it easy for residents to self-manage their diet. Menus also include super foods such as acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate and dark greens.

In addition to assisted living, MorningStar of Happy Valley provides 27 secure suites for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Please visit our website and use our Virtual Assistant to obtain more information.

Holistic Memory Care - Compassionate & Supportive

April 23, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

If a loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, MorningStar of Happy Valley is ready to help. We understand the heartbreak a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s brings with it and wish to share the burden. Our comprehensive memory care supports residents and their families with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. MorningStar’s holistic approach is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and uses Montessori-based therapy techniques. As dementia care specialists, we feel it is our privilege – our calling – to walk alongside residents during this unexpected and challenging journey.

Once the decision is made to join our MorningStar family, we meet with the individual and their family to learn as much as we can about their background, talents and personal preferences. Aiding us in this process is a tool called “To Know Me is To Love Me.” From there, we create a specialized, individualized care plan to calm or stimulate as needed.

Happy Valley’s Reflections Neighborhood is designed from the ground up to ensure a safe, secure environment in which residents can explore and maintain a sense of independence. Common areas are warm and inviting and meals are thoughtfully prepared and attractively served to encourage residents’ appetites. Purposeful, meaningful activities connect with and nurture the individual, whatever the level of memory loss may be.

With 27 memory care suites, we are equipped to comfort and care for our most tender residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. For seniors requiring a little help with ADLs (activities of daily living), MorningStar of Happy Valley has 61 private suites available in a range of configurations and floorplans. Conveniently located, we are near Interstate 205, medical facilities, the shopping and entertainment destination of the Clackamas Town Center and the popular Happy Valley food-cart park. Please call or visit our website to learn more.

Assisted Living can Enhance Seniors’ Quality of Life

March 23, 2021 by Rena Phillips

A Place for Mom’s website, a free service that helps families in their senior care search, reports the various services offered at assisted living communities can make it a healthier, safer living option for many seniors. As services typically involve 24/7 care, nutritional meals and wellness programs, it means residents receive the kind of care required to enhance their quality of life.

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Happy Valley provide the social connections necessary to seniors’ wellbeing as well as intellectual stimulation. The individual and their family get peace of mind knowing help is available when it is needed. Likewise recent research shows assisted living communities may help seniors avoid falls as most are equipped with safety features such as handicap-accessible bathrooms and wheelchair accessible doorways. MorningStar’s emergency call systems in each suite mean immediate help is at hand.

MorningStar of Happy Valley offers seniors assistance with another all-too common problem of medication mismanagement. The JAMA Internal Medicine journal recently published a study showing “80% of older adults regularly take at least two prescription medications, and 36% regularly take at least five prescription drugs.” The Department of Health and Human Services reports up to 55 percent of older adults are “non-complaint” in their medications including skipping doses or failing to take medication as prescribed. Either one can result in hospitalizations or deaths. Our medication management service helps to avoid these problems and includes dispensing as well as ordering prescription drugs.

MorningStar’s comprehensive care starts with residents having an individualized plan created to address their specialized needs. It is frequently reviewed and updated as required. Our day-to-day care is intended to help residents maintain a healthier lifestyle with nutritional meals, exercise classes, and life enrichment programs designed for their needs. Please contact us to learn more about MorningStar of Happy Valley’s trusted assisted living and memory care.

Would Assisted Living Improve the Quality of Life for an Elderly Loved One?

March 12, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Sometimes a senior has a fall or another medical emergency that precipitates the need for a change in their living circumstances such as a move into an assisted living community.  Other times, the situation is not so clear-cut and is more a case of a senior slowly losing the ability to attend to their daily care needs.  We know it is upsetting for families to see their loved one decline, which is why experts offer advice to help determine if an assisted living setting would be an improvement in their lifestyle.

One way to decide if assisted living is right for your parent or another loved one is to take an inventory of the things they are having trouble doing for themselves and if assistance would improve their quality of life.  For instance, are they having a hard time preparing and cooking meals or need help bathing, toileting, and dressing?  Have they stopped driving and spend a lot of time alone?  Is your normally tidy parent now letting the household tasks go and/or mail is stacking up unopened and bills not getting paid?

Other factors that indicate the need for more help includes recent falls or burns from using water that is too hot or from cooking.  Warning signs also include a history of medication mismanagement or worsening chronic health problems, which could all benefit from the care received in an assisted living community.

At MorningStar of Fountain Hills, we offer 63 stylish assisted living suites with a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood has 28 secure memory care suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  We make it easy for your retirement years to be carefree with a full range of amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities as well as a staff who feel called to serve seniors.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities Fountain Hills, AZ offers. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding assisted living and memory care.

Is It Safe for Seniors to Get their Healthcare Checkups?

January 27, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

As more and more people are receiving their COVID-19 vaccines, we all are optimistic about life getting back to normal sometime soon.  Nonetheless doctors want to remind seniors and anyone with chronic health problems that keeping up with medical checkups as well as some preventative screenings is critical to their continued good health.  While much of routine healthcare can be handled by telemedicine, many physicians are deciding on a patient-to-patient basis whether to see the patient in person.

The postponement of many cancer screenings and other preventative tests over the last year for diseases, which if caught early, give patients the best chance of recovery, is a worry to the medical community.  The Epic Health Research Network notes just how big of a problem it was in a July 2020 reports that showed from March to June of last year, 63% of breast exams, 64% of colon exams, and 67% of cervical exams were not done based on the number of screenings that would normally be expected in an average year.

Other important healthcare for adults 65 years and older is eye exams.  Ophthalmologists advise seniors to have a full examination at least every year or two to check for diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts and other eye conditions.  They also say if you notice any changes with your eyes, to call your doctor.  Additionally the American Dental Association declared in November that they "firmly believe" dental care can continue to be delivered safely.  They state there has been “no documented transmission of COVID-19 in a clinical dental setting.”  Hopefully getting vaccinated should make it safer for seniors to resume important medical care but always consult with your healthcare provider.  Doctors also warn that for now, everyone should still wear a mask.

At the MorningStar of Happy Valley, all new residents will have priority access to the COVID vaccine.  Our luxury, three-story community offers 61 private assisted living suites and 27 secure memory care devoted to those with Alzheimer’s or dementia-related diseases.   Please visit our website for pricing, availability and for answers to your questions.

MorningStar of Happy Valley represents the finest in senior living with our distinct mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we are honored to create a true “home” for residents.  Contact us to learn more about exceptional assisted living in Happy Valley, OR.

Assisted Living Offers Many Intrinsic Benefits for Seniors

January 23, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

One of the big problems that COVID-19 has caused for seniors is social isolation.  By trying to protect themselves against the dangers of the virus, many have stayed away from loved ones and friends, resulting in loneliness, and even in some cases, depression.  According to a recent report from the AARP Foundation and the United Health Foundation, the impact of COVID is more pronounced on older adults as more than half of those 50 years and older say they have felt socially isolated during the pandemic.

At assisted living communities like MorningStar of Happy Valley, our remarkable residents and staff have shown great strength and resiliency in dealing with COVID over the last year.  Much of this is due to the fact that we know we are all in this together!  Through many layers of defenses and tireless efforts, we have been very fortunate in keeping COVID from our door, and like to say the only thing “positive” is our attitude.  In fact family members have written to let us know they are so grateful for the care we have provided their loved ones.  One family says that, “MorningStar has been a Godsend.  The people who work here are ‘earth angels.’  They have nothing but patience and compassion.  I didn’t think they could be so incredible 100% of the time, but that truly is the case.”

Now our MorningStar communities have started a new campaign we call “#Back2hugs” as both our staff and residents are getting vaccinated against the coronavirus.   In addition we want new residents to know that they will have priority access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

The MorningStar of Happy Valley assisted living and memory care community is proud to be a true home to residents.  With 61 private suites for assisted living, we offer spacious studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom floor plans with some as large as 865 sq. ft.  For those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, we have 27 secure suites devoted to individualized, specialized care.  MorningStar of Happy Valley has now been open for over a year, and while it has been much different than we had expected, we feel blessed beyond words to be a Family for Life.

MorningStar of Happy Valley represents the finest in senior living with our distinct mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we are honored to create a true “home” for residents.  Contact us for more information about one of the area’s best assisted living and memory care communities.

Studies Show a Decline in New Dementia Cases

January 21, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Researchers are studying promising news that indicates a decline in the number of new cases of dementia.  The Aug. 4, 2020, issue of Neurology published a report from the Alzheimer's Research Consortium, which looked at data from people over the age of 65 in both Europe and North America.  Their findings show the percentage of people diagnosed with dementia has dropped 13% every 10 years over the past 30 years.

This does not mean that dementia is not a widespread problem.  As life expectancy has improved along with the number of people on the planet, so has the number of adults with dementia increased.  However, what researchers are pleased to see after looking at seven different studies is that new cases are actually lower than what we had been expecting based on the rate of the increases of several decades ago.  Scientists believe that the decline may be due to “treatment for dementia risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and inflammation.”

If you are looking for care for a family member with Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related disease, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Rio Rancho.  Along with assisted living, we provide compassionate and loving care to those suffering from memory impairment.  Our 26 secure, memory care suites are equipped to care for your loved one from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages.

MorningStar’s unique approach to memory care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the individual essence of each resident, and our energy is put toward finding ways to celebrate and elevate life.  Along with individualized care plans, residents receive 24-hour care, daily health monitoring, access to a full-time nurse, and participate in wellness programs and services tailored to their special needs.  Please visit our website to learn more about unsurpassed senior living in Rio Rancho, NM.

Are You Caring for a Loved One with Dementia?

January 15, 2021 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Statistics from the Alzheimer's Association indicate that one in ten people 65 years and older in the U.S. have Alzheimer's disease, and as baby boomers age, the total number of cases is expected to grow.  Furthermore, the Alzheimer’s Association cites a statistic showing that more than 16 million Americans are caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia.  If you are currently in that position, remember you are not alone and there are many resources designed to help.

It is a fact that caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is a big job and it can take a toll on the health and wellbeing of a family caretaker, which is why it is imperative to recognize when the task becomes too difficult.  This is the time to make meaningful lifestyle changes for both you and the person with dementia, and one option is to look into a senior care community that offers specialized memory care.

At A Place for Mom website, they discuss some of the reasons why memory care should be considered for both the safety of the person suffering with the disease as well as for the benefit of caretakers.  The habit of “wandering” is one of those circumstances and can be a frequent problem of dementia, posing a safety risk including an increase in falls and injuries. Another common trait of Alzheimer’s is a condition known as “Sundowner syndrome,” which causes a person to become agitated and to exhibit aggressive behavior later in the day that can be very disruptive.

Also, memory care communities like the Reflections Neighborhood at MorningStar of Fountain Hills are specifically designed to safely and securely care for a person with dementia unlike most private homes.   In addition, memory care offers 24/7 care providers that are available to deal with situations even in the dead of night.  Furthermore, as the disease progresses, care needs become even more demanding and can be overwhelming for a family caregiver.  Please visit our website for more information.

MorningStar of Fountain Hills’ mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding assisted living and memory care.

Tiana cites her former colleague Dee as the person who has most influenced her during her long career in senior care.  She explains that Dee’s passion, respect, model of servant-leadership has not only motivated her but shaped her. She adds that she has also met “many spectacular seniors who have taught me many life lessons through their stories.”

Tsering Yandon, who serves as our Wellness Director, explains that she cared for her Popo (“lovely grandfather”) who suffered from dementia for five years.  She states that as tough as that was, it brought her tremendous joy.  Tsering adds, “To have been able to serve him until the end of his life is something I cherish. And it contributes to my call to serve other seniors as well.”

Director of Community Relations, Shannon Calles explains that seniors have taught her by example with their 50-, 60-, 75-year marriages, that she needs to work at being in the ‘No Matter What’ club with her husband. Shannon says, “The storm always passes and there I want us to be, together in the end. That’s the story I want in my book.”

Our beautiful community offers 61 graciously appointed suites for assisted living with configurations that include spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans (some as large as 865 square feet). In our Reflections Neighborhood, we offer 27 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please visit our website to learn more about our loving home.

Does a Parent or Spouse with Alzheimer’s No Longer Recognize You?

September 15, 2020 by Rena Phillips

Apart from having to watch a loved one go through the devastating stages of Alzheimer’s disease, the next saddest thing may be when the person stops recognizing you.   This can bring up all sorts of feelings, of which some while not fair, are there nonetheless.  When we take time to go visit a family member with AD in memory care and they don’t even know who we are, some people wonder why they are making the effort.

However a long-term caregiver reminds us how can we be certain the person is not reacting to our presence is some way like the sound of our voice, or the touch of our hand?   In the same way people in comas have said they heard the voices of loved ones even when they were unable to communicate, perhaps a person in the later stages of Alzheimer’s knows we are there for them on some level.  At the very least, in whatever way they can understand, we want them to know they are loved and valued.

Experts suggest a way to help make you more recognizable to your parent or spouse.  If you are an adult child, try putting together a timeline of you as a small child, an adolescent, a young adult to a current picture.  Spouses can do the same starting with a picture of them from their early days as a couple to the present.

For anyone having difficulty being around a loved one with Alzheimer’s, it may be helpful to learn all you can about the disease so you understand what is going on.  It will also teach you better ways to more effectively communicate with the person.

At the MorningStar at Englefield Green memory care community, we are dementia care specialists who provide both compassionate and professional care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our approach is holistic and encompasses every aspect of the disease as well as individualized care.  Visit our website for pricing and availability and to learn more.

The Loss of a Spouse May be Bad for Our Brains

August 15, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

We all understand how heartbreaking it is when a senior loses a beloved life partner but recent research now suggests that a surviving spouse may also be at a higher risk for cognitive decline.  The study reports that individuals who were widowed with high levels of beta-amyloid plaque ( a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease), were found to decline cognitively three times faster than their counterparts who had not suffered the loss of a spouse.   Dr. Nancy Donovan, the study’s lead researcher and chief of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, says, "The associations of widowhood and amyloid were compounded, not simply additive, indicating that widowhood is a specific risk factor for cognitive decline due to Alzheimer's disease."

While the Alzheimer’s Associations cautions that the study was a small one, practicing geriatrician and internist, Dr. Marzena Gieniusz, of the Northwell Health in Manhasset, N.Y., said she often sees signs of cognitive decline in surviving spouses in her practice.  Experts say it could be that mild memory loss was already present beforehand but was not obvious when the person had the support of a loving spouse.  Another reason may be the surviving spouse had day-to-day, steady companionship and socialization that helped them stay emotionally engaged.

Not only is it easier for many of us to face the world as a couple, but when a spouse dies, the survivor may be more socially isolated, which in itself puts a person more at risk for cognitive decline.  The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that surviving spouses make an effort to follow the guidelines for decreasing their risk for Alzheimer’s by exercising, engaging in cognitively stimulating activities, eating a healthy diet, managing stress levels and reducing cardiovascular risk factors.  Also even if you are avoiding in-person contact due to COVID 19, it is important to stay socially engaged.  Remember to make the effort to call a friend, do facetime calls with grandkids and family, write emails and snail mail letters, or join an online support group.

If a loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, please contact one of the area’s most loving, professional Alzheimer’s care homes.  The compassionate team at MorningStar at Englefield Green takes a holistic approach to memory care that is both specialized and individualized. Is it Time to Consider Care Options for Your Loved One with Dementia?

July 27, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Caring for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia can be a very stressful job.  If you think it is time to consider other care options, rather than feeling disappointed in yourself, remember the job of a caregiver is tough and it may be in yours as well as your spouse, mom, or dad’s best interest to move them into memory care.

If caring for a loved one requires more effort on your part than you are able to give physically or mentally, please reach out and get the help you need as your own health and wellbeing may be adversely impacted. Also, experts stress that while there is no downside to placing someone in memory care in the earlier stages of the disease there could be drawbacks to waiting too long.  Remember the more advanced stages bring with it a significant decline in everyday functioning.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Rio Rancho offers 26 secure suites for the care of residents with memory impairment from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a team of individuals who through purposeful training and experience are dementia care specialists.  Our team understands the unique needs of each resident and delivers that care with compassion and thoughtfulness.  Additionally, every aspect of our home has been designed to accommodate those needs.

Keep in mind as the disease progresses; it becomes very difficult for a family to keep up with the increasing needs as the person requires more and more assistance with daily care activities such as bathing, toileting, and eating.  Other signs of advanced dementia include reduced mobility, wandering, and falling, which may require home modifications.  Professional memory care homes such as ours are equipped to deal with these issues and have 24/7 caregivers available.  So rather than feel like you let your loved down by not caring for them yourself, placing them in a multi-faceted community designed to attend to their changing needs may be the most loving thing you can do.

Some Good News in the Fight Against Alzheimer's Disease

July 25, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association, we can stay updated on new advancements and treatments for Alzheimer’s by using their informative website.  For example, the 2019 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) revealed several pieces of good news in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

One of the most significant news stories was that we will likely have the capacity to test for Alzheimer’s disease easily and more affordable in the very near future.   The Alzheimer’s Association says that researchers are currently working on developing a simple blood test to detect the signs of the disease early, accurately, and much more affordable than other methods used.  This means individuals can benefit from early interventions such as medications and cognitive activities and change modifiable risk factors like losing weight, getting enough sleep, and quitting smoking. The person also has time to plan for the future.

Researchers also report, “500 new drug targets have been identified, which address everything from reducing inflammation in the brain to protecting nerve cell health.”  Another thing that emerged from the AAIC is evidence that a healthier lifestyle may decrease our risk for dementia.  This includes eating a low-fat, high vegetable diet, getting regular exercise, and engaging in cognitive stimulation.  In addition, the report said intensive high blood pressure treatment can significantly reduce the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment, which can lead to dementia.  One other significant finding included discovering specific sex-based differences in women that put them at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s than men.

Much of the research presented at the AAIC is done with monies from federal sources and fundraising efforts directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.  Their Part the Cloud initiative awards researchers grants to undertake the important work of finding a cure for this devastating disease.

Alzheimer's Can Cause Periods of Agitation & Anxiety

July 15, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

People with Alzheimer’s may express feelings of agitation and anxiety, which can be caused by the frustration that comes with the inability to get others to understand what they need.  However experts say there are some tips to help circumvent or prevent getting into situations that can become emotionally charged.

If you feel the person is starting to feel anxious, it could be the environment they are in.  If this is the case, remove them to a quieter place and encourage them to rest or use soothing rituals that have worked in the past.  Often a noisy room including having a TV on can act as just such a trigger.  If that is not the problem, check to make sure the person is physically okay and that they are not hungry, thirsty or need to use the bathroom.  Also make sure they are not too hot or cold.  If they are still able to communicate, get down to their eye level and ask them in simple words to tell you what they need.  Another approach is to distract them by taking a walk or putting on music and encouraging them to dance.

While trying to calm the person down, make sure you do not raise your voice.  Remain speaking in a calm voice and give the person the time to try and express the problem.   If you feel the person is experiencing lots of periods of anxiety and agitation, it is a good idea to discuss it with their health care provider.  Also make sure you have a good support system to share your experiences with and perhaps learn something from other caregivers.

If you or a loved one is suffering from dementia, please contact one of the area’s most experienced Alzheimer’s care homes.  MorningStar at Englefield Green takes a holistic approach to dementia care that is individualized and encompasses the whole person. Please visit our website to learn more about what a specialized care plan can do for your loved one.

Keep Your Brain Healthy with Mentally Challenging Activities

July 08, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Several studies indicate life-long learning is good for seniors’ brain health and starting a new hobby or learning a skill late in life can help to boost a person’s memory.  In one study from the University of Texas at Dallas, researchers found that older adults “who took on a new mentally challenging hobby saw a lasting increase in their memory skills.”  They theorize that when seniors mentally challenge themselves with new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to operate a computer, or being taught to quilt, networks within the brain are being strengthened.

Neurologists in another study from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland discovered that a lifelong pursuit of mentally challenging activities may actually help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.  Their findings suggest that older adults who frequently read, played mentally challenging games like chess, or engaged in other intellectually stimulating activities are less likely to have Alzheimer’s, which impacts millions of Americans.

Other research out of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School appear to support these findings.  Their study relied on interviews as well as brain scans of participants, and findings indicate that seniors who have had a higher level of intellectual stimulation throughout the course of their lives, showed a marked delay in the onset of memory-related problems and other Alzheimer’s type symptoms.

At MorningStar of Fountain Hills, we believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless, and feel it is our privilege to provide seniors an environment where they can be productive and engaged.  Our Life Enrichment Team presents creative ways to stay active and enhance health and wellness, stimulate the brain and encourage connection.

While we have had to temporarily suspend group activities due to the coronavirus, as the nation slowly reopens, MorningStar is carefully following suit with each state’s phasing and pacing where our communities are located. We are closely watching new developments and continue to evaluate best practices and innovations in our services to seniors.  Please visit our website to learn more about one of the top senior living communities in the Fountain Hills, AZ area.

Wandering can be a Dangerous Problem for Someone with Alzheimer's

July 01, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living

The Alzheimer’s Association says that six in 10 people with dementia will wander.  The danger with this is someone with Alzheimer’s may not remember their name, their address or how to get home.  Furthermore the more agitated the person becomes when they feel lost and disorientated, the less able they may be to tell someone something that could help get them safely back home.

Experts say anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia that is mobile is at risk for wandering.  Even if the person is in the early stages of the disease they may still get disorientated; but thankfully there are strategies to help keep your loved one safe.

To start with it is important to have a plan in place in the event that it should happen to your parent or another loved one.  Find out if your area has a ”Safe Return Program” and enroll them in it and have them wear a GPS locating device at all times.  Also learn to recognize the warning signs of a potential wandering such as: has the person forgotten how to get to familiar places, talks about going home even when they are home, gets confused as to where familiar places in the home are, and acts nervous or anxious in crowded areas.

Tips to help prevent wandering include creating and sticking to a routine, identifying the times when wandering is most likely to occur, and try to make sure all of the person’s needs are met so they don’t feel the need to go out.  In addition reposition door locks out of the line of sight and make sure car keys are not left out.  You can buy a device that sounds an alarm when a door or window is opened; and never leave the person locked in at home or in a car alone.

Alzheimer’s care homes such as MorningStar at Englefield Green are designed with a secure environment that encourages residents to safely explore their surroundings.  Our residents can freely move about our home but we have special security features to prevent them from wandering out of our community.  In addition our dedicated staff is trained to keep residents engaged and safe.

MorningStar at Englefield Green embodies the very best in senior living with a distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” that sets us apart from other senior living communities.  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing seniors and investing in a staff with a felt calling to serve, we offer loving, compassionate care within a beautiful home-like setting.  If you are looking for one of the area’s most trusted Alzheimer’s care homes, please give us a call.

June 30, 2020 by Rena Phillips in senior living
