Take Precautions to Prevent Falls but it’s Important to Keep Exercising

June 03, 2022 by Rena Phillips in senior living

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that each year, one out of every five Americans aged 65 years and older has a fall that results in an injury such as broken bones or a head injury.  However, medical professionals say while it is important for seniors to take precautions to prevent falls as injuries can be serious, they also remind us that regardless of how old we are, it is beneficial for our overall health to keep moving.  Experts explain that failing to engage in “mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”

They go on to say that despite commonly held beliefs, falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk of a fall.  Their first advice is to talk to your doctor about your risk and prevention.  Tell them if you have fallen and discuss your medications to see if side effects include dizziness or sleepiness that could contribute to falls.

While falls are common in seniors 65 years of age and older, individuals with dementia are at an even greater risk.  Researchers say there are several reasons for this including gait and balance issues as well as problems concentrating and with staying focused on the task at hand.  Other issues that may increase the risk of falls include poor eyesight and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, and arthritis or numbness in the feet.  If you often feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing or suddenly sitting up, ask your doctor if you might have postural hypotension, and find out how you can alleviate the symptoms.

Further tips to reduce your risk include having your eyes checked annually and updating your glasses when needed.  In addition, talk to your doctor about the best footwear for inside the house as well as outside.  Check your home for trip hazards (the CDC has a list of tips) and install grab bars in the bathroom.  Finally, ask your doctor about exercises to strengthen your leg muscles as well as balance-training exercises to improve balance.

Learn More About Shingles

May 13, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk for getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone the chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a wash cloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

Age-Related Hearing Loss

April 14, 2022 by Rena Phillips in senior living

The National Institute of Health reports approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing. Hearing loss causes someone a range of problems including difficulty understanding and following a doctor’s advice, responding to safety warnings, and hearing doorbells, phone calls, and alarms. Another all-too common problem is it can be hard to follow conversations with family and friends, and many start avoiding situations where they may be frustrated or embarrassed.

Medical experts advise asking your primary care physician for a referral to an otolaryngologist, an audiologist or a hearing aid specialist. An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. They will try to determine the cause of your hearing loss and treatment options. They may refer you to an audiologist who is trained in measuring the degree of loss as well as recommend treatment, which may include fitting you for a hearing aid. There are three different types of hearing aids and it may take some trial and error to find one that works for you (most can be purchased for a trial period).

In some cases, doctors may recommend Cochlear implants, small electronic devices surgically implanted in the inner ear that help provide a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or hard-of-hearing.  Other treatment options include hearing assistive devices for your phones to amplify sound; closed circuit systems for churches or theaters; and lip or speech reading classes.

At MorningStar of Happy Valley we promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing comfort and security. Our beautiful home has 61 stylish assisted living suites with a choice of floor plans. In addition, 27 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood are devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Please contact us to learn more about our amenities, care services, availability and pricing.

MorningStar of Happy Valley’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide residents exceptional assisted living and memory care.

Assisted Living can Enhance Seniors’ Quality of Life

March 23, 2021 by Rena Phillips

A Place for Mom’s website, a free service that helps families in their senior care search, reports the various services offered at assisted living communities can make it a healthier, safer living option for many seniors. As services typically involve 24/7 care, nutritional meals and wellness programs, it means residents receive the kind of care required to enhance their quality of life.

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Happy Valley provide the social connections necessary to seniors’ wellbeing as well as intellectual stimulation. The individual and their family get peace of mind knowing help is available when it is needed. Likewise recent research shows assisted living communities may help seniors avoid falls as most are equipped with safety features such as handicap-accessible bathrooms and wheelchair accessible doorways. MorningStar’s emergency call systems in each suite mean immediate help is at hand.

MorningStar of Happy Valley offers seniors assistance with another all-too common problem of medication mismanagement. The JAMA Internal Medicine journal recently published a study showing “80% of older adults regularly take at least two prescription medications, and 36% regularly take at least five prescription drugs.” The Department of Health and Human Services reports up to 55 percent of older adults are “non-complaint” in their medications including skipping doses or failing to take medication as prescribed. Either one can result in hospitalizations or deaths. Our medication management service helps to avoid these problems and includes dispensing as well as ordering prescription drugs.

MorningStar’s comprehensive care starts with residents having an individualized plan created to address their specialized needs. It is frequently reviewed and updated as required. Our day-to-day care is intended to help residents maintain a healthier lifestyle with nutritional meals, exercise classes, and life enrichment programs designed for their needs. Please contact us to learn more about MorningStar of Happy Valley’s trusted assisted living and memory care.

When Professionals Debate over Medical Care, We Typically Win

March 18, 2021 by Rena Phillips

Doctors say the public should understand while information on best practices in medical care may change over time and/or in some cases the medical community is not speaking with one voice; it is not necessarily a bad thing. Rather it is often a result of new research and scientific facts surfacing changing the debate and the messaging.

Nowhere have we seen more changes evolve in medical recommendations and advice than over the last year in regard to COVID-19. Experts explain this is an excellent example of new information coming in over a period of time that updated our knowledge of an unknown virus, which had rapidly spread across the globe before we had learned much about it. In a recent article in the U.S. News & World Report, Dr. Neel Anand, M.D., says, “It isn't new or unique to COVID-19. To be honest, debate among scientists and medical experts is precisely how the targeted and most effective therapies and treatments develop.”

Medical progress evolves much like other scientific progress, and involves formulating a hypothesis and then setting out to prove or disprove it. Healthy debate helps to move us forward and typically the end result is good for our own medical care. However Dr. Anand cautions if scientific debate is going to be useful in advancing medicine, it requires real experts. For example, he says as a doctor specializing in spinal surgery, he would not consider it fruitful to debate the specifics of spinal surgery from someone who isn’t a qualified physician or researcher in the field.

This is why doctors and scientists have often disagreed or changed guidelines on COVID-19 as well as on other medical conditions and illnesses. Doctors say it is an example of how the scientific process works, which allows them to make better decisions regarding care.

At the MorningStar of Happy Valley senior living community, we offer 61 private assisted living suites and another 27 secure suites devoted to specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Please contact us with any questions you may have as we are happy to talk to you about your or a loved one’s care.

Need a “Little Help” to Maintain Your Independence?

February 18, 2021 by Rena Phillips

Too often seniors mistakenly believe that moving into assisted living means an end to their independence and their life as they knew it.  We want to reassure you that at today’s assisted living communities like MorningStar of Happy Valley; nothing could be further from the truth.

Aging.com explains that while changes in a person’s ability to care for themselves can be caused by underlying medical conditions, studies show the importance of seniors receiving the assistance they need with the ADLs (activities of daily living). “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior's quality of life.  Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.”

Another benefit of getting the help you need when you need it, is it actually gives the person a renewed sense of independence and lets them feel like they are once again in control of their life.  Independence promotes a sense of achievement as well as a sense of self-worth and purpose.  It encourages achievement, and reminds seniors that they still have a lot to contribute to their families, their communities and the world as a whole.

At the MorningStar of Happy Valley assisted living and memory care community, one important part of our mission statement includes “valuing all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals — a commitment to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence.”  Thus our entire community is focused on physical, intellectual, spiritual and social activities that present creative ways for our residents to stay active and productive each day.  Residents are also encouraged to tap into their own unique talents and experiences by leading special interest clubs.

Our beautiful home has 61 private assisted living suites in a variety of configurations to meet a variety of needs from spacious studios to one- and two-bedroom floorplans as large as 928 sq. ft.  In addition residents have peace of mind knowing that help is readily available when they need it. We also have 27 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Please see our website to learn more.

MorningStar of Happy Valley represents the finest in senior living with our distinct mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we are honored to create a true “home” for residents.  Contact us to learn more about exceptional assisted living in Happy Valley.

Tips to Help You Manage Stress Better

November 18, 2020 by Rena Phillips

While we all have experienced varying levels of stress and anxiety throughout our lives, experts have some advice on how we can better navigate through those times.  They also are quick to remind us that some stress in our lives can be a good thing as it motivates us to do things like meet deadlines and accomplish things.

However stress becomes a problem when there is too much of it or low levels of stress that continue for long periods without a break says Dr. Michael Brodsky, medical director for behavioral health for L.A. Care Health Plan, the largest publicly-operated health plan in the U.S.  He explains that, “Low levels of stress release the same types of stress hormones that are produced by the fight-or-flight response,” and that “chronic exposure to such reactions are related to a number of health problems.”  These include conditions such as obesity, heart disease, anxiety and depression, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, diabetes, hypertension, headaches and others.

Dr. Brodsky and other experts offers a number of healthy habits to help us manage stress more effectively starting with creating a routine around your personal habits including sleep.  Adults should strive for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night and stick to a scheduled bedtime.

Another way to decrease your level of stress is to reduce your daily consumption of digital media.  Scientists have found that the blue light emitting from our personal devices can disrupt our ability to release enough melatonin, a hormone that helps to regulate our sleep/wake cycles and keep us from getting a good night’s sleep.

Experts say it can help to create a plan to deal with the things you want to accomplish each day starting with writing down daily goals and priorities so they feel more manageable.   Exercise, yoga or breathing exercises and mindful mediation can also be helpful.  Doctors recommend seeking support from family and friends, or if you need, medical experts.

At MorningStar of Rio Rancho, we are proud to offer the best senior living with our distinct mission statement - “to honor, to value, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents in a beautiful setting.  Please contact us to learn more about unparalleled senior living in Rio Rancho, NM.

Learn More About Aging

November 10, 2020 by Rena Phillips

Instead of thinking that growing older is an endless array of ailments and aches and pain, you may want to rethink your attitude toward it. Research has found that people who have a more positive attitude toward aging appear to do better. Remember there are many things that older adults are good at including what is known as crystalized intelligence, which is gained through a lifetime of learning and experience.

Research also shows that unlike many common myths about older people being grumpy that most are happier and more relaxed than when they were younger. Scientists are uncertain why this is but hypothesize that it could be due to the fact that “older people might control their emotions better, and focus more on how to make the most of life.”

In addition, while many seniors report waking up during the night and may go to sleep earlier and wake earlier, the majority say they get a restful night’s sleep. Another benefit to old age is that for people who have suffered most of their lives with migraines, once you are in your 70s, a majority of them report no longer having them. If you are part of the 10 percent of women or 5 percent of men still having migraines, you may not experience pain but rather visual or sensory disturbances.

Another plus to growing older is that many people report feeling more confident. The American Psychological Association’s annual “Stress in America” report found baby boomers and older adults report less stress than their younger counterparts. And when they do experience stress, many older adults say they manage it better.

Finally, researchers have found that Americans 60 years of age and older are the fastest growing block of voters and a whole lot more likely to vote. This is typically good news for seniors as older voters tend to vote on issues concerning them such as Social Security, Medicare and healthcare.

MorningStar of Beaverton proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Senior Living Offers Many Benefits to the Health & Wellbeing of Residents

October 29, 2020 by Rena Phillips

Many of us have seen the articles regarding COVID-19 and the curtailing of all or some of nursing homes and senior living communities’ outside visitations depending on the area’s coronavirus activity.  Presently MorningStar Senior Living communities are adhering to the guidance of the State in which they are located in.  Thereby, the amount of freedom under our various roofs is dictated by its location and testing status.  In addition we are proud of our team’s diligent, flexible and creative efforts to continue to enrich the lives of our residents.

We are pleased to say most of our communities including MorningStar of Rio Rancho have been able to reintroduce a more normal way of life.  In addition there was never a moment when we stopped being grateful for one another and to bond as a family; and most importantly we never stopped having fun!  Just take a look at MorningStar of Rio Rancho’s Facebook page or the bottom of our community’s home page.

Last month we celebrated National Assisted Living Week (Sept 13-19) with a unique theme of “Through the Looking Glass - An Adventure in Wonderland!”  The week’s fun-filled activities included: White Rabbit Scavenger Hunt, Mad Hatter Bingo, Wonderland Croquet, Queens Delicious Rose Cupcakes, Cheshire Trivia, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, Queen’s Card Toss and more!  As Grandparent’s Day coincided at the start of the week, we had a “Welcome to Wonderland Photo Op,” in tribute to our many grandparents.

Another activity we hosted was a door-to-door traveling carnival for National Senior Citizen’s Day that included games such as ring toss; spin it to win it; bean bag toss; and a fish bowl game.  The traveling concession booth offered residents cotton candy, popcorn, mini corndogs, and a signature cherry limeade drink.  Moreover we could not let National Kiss and Make Up Day (Aug 25) pass by without a celebration.  This was a reminder to all of us to put an end to quarrels, arguments, and fights and come to an agreement.   All activities were done with smiles and laughter, safely behind a face mask!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 25, 2020 by Rena Phillips

The National Breast Cancer Awareness month was started in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries.  It was kicked off by Betty Ford, who was herself a survivor of breast cancer with a week-long event.  Symbolized by a pink ribbon, its goal is to educate women about breast cancer and the benefits of early detection including promoting mammograms as an important tool in the fight against breast cancer.

If you have wondered about the origin of the pink ribbon, it was first introduced in the national campaign in 1992 by the Estée Lauder cosmetic company.  It handed out 1.5 million ribbons that year as a visual reminder of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Today many of us wear a pink ribbon in October as a way to promote awareness and early detection and treatment as well as to support survivors and those who died from the disease.  The event is observed in countries across the world as each year there are approximately 1.38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer (IARC Globocan, 2008).  It is the most common cancer in women worldwide.

According to the American Cancer Society, major treatment advances of recent years have made surviving breast cancer way more promising than it used to be.  In fact studies now report a 5-year survival rate of 99 percent for women diagnosed in Stage 1 of the disease.   However doctors are quick to add that every case is different.

At the MorningStar of Rio Rancho assisted living and memory care community, we support the health and wellbeing of all of our residents.  Available care services are broad, and in addition, each resident has a 24/7 care manager and access to an onsite nurse.  Please visit our website to learn more about our holistic approach to senior living in Rio Rancho, NM.

What does an Occupational Therapist Do?

August 31, 2020 by Rena Phillips

As we age, we can experience health issues such as a stroke or other disabilities that may benefit from the services of an occupational therapist (OTs).  When asked, many people have no idea what an OT does; while others think they help individuals find work.  Actually, an OT may be an instrumental part of your healthcare team who will work with you to facilitate your best recovery.  If you are wondering what the difference is between a physical therapist (PT) and an OT, a PT focuses on restoring or improving movement, strength, and range of motion; while an OT works on improving the motor skills you need to perform daily tasks.

If a loved one has suffered from a stroke, they may have lost the ability to perform tasks known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), which include bathing, toileting, dressing, eating grooming, etc.  The job of the OT is to teach the person how to carry out daily, functional activities despite the impairment in order to improve quality of life and maximize independence.

For instance, if the stroke caused damage to one side of the body, an OT focuses on therapies that promote motor recovery.  One common intervention is to limit or constrain the person’s movement on the unaffected arm, while having them use the affected arm to do repetitive or functional tasks.  OTs may also recommend special equipment to improve their patients’ lives such as a wheelchair, walker, electric can opener or toothbrush, a special keyboard for the computer, or eating aids and then teach the person to use them.

If you are looking for exceptional senior housing, Rio Rancho’s MorningStar community may be the place for you.  MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Rio Rancho provides a wide range of amenities and services to ensure the comfort, wellbeing and safety of our remarkable residents.  In addition, if one of our residents requires OT, PT or other auxiliary services, we have trusted partners we will recommend.  Please visit our website for further information, and email us regarding pricing and availability.

Compassionate Memory Care at MorningStar of Happy Valley

August 25, 2020 by Rena Phillips

At MorningStar of Happy Valley, we understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.  We know the path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey.  MorningStar of Happy Valley offers assisted living as well as experienced, compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia right through to the most advanced stages.

Our memory care is in a separate area we call Reflections Neighborhood and consists of 27 secure suites.  The Reflections Neighborhood is specifically designed to allow residents the freedom to move safely about their spacious surroundings.  Also, given the nature of dementia, residents pay one price for their suite and their care regardless of the level of memory loss.

As dementia care experts, our unique approach and philosophy to caring for those afflicted with the disease is called “Lavender Sky.”  We know the essence of the person remains despite the level of memory loss, and our job is to nurture and support the individual by finding ways to calm or stimulate as the situation demands.  Lavender Sky provides the path for us to enter, embrace, and explore the “purple world” of memory loss, and to cross over the physical, emotional, and relational boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

Every aspect of our home is designed to provide the comfort, wellness and safety our special residents require including mealtime.  We know those suffering from memory loss can sometimes have compromised abilities at the table.  We address this by providing a selection of finger foods, texture-modified diets (mechanical soft and puréed, thickened liquids), and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

MorningStar of Happy Valley invites area families to contact us for more information and availability and pricing.  We look forward to meeting you.

MorningStar of Happy Valley proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. Avoiding Too Much Sugar in Your Diet

August 15, 2020 by Rena Phillips

We all may be eating and drinking foods we consider to be healthy but they may contain far more sugar than we think they do.  It can even happen with foods we do not necessarily think of as sweet such as ketchup or barbeque sauce.  Also making what we assume is the healthier choice like “low fat” or “light” yogurt may actually contain more sugar than the regular variety.  Some low-fat yogurt has over 30 grams of sugar; and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends men consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) of added sugar per day. For women, the amount is just 6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) per day.

Another food we think of as healthy is granola.  While it is true that the main ingredient is rolled oats, which provides protein, healthy fats and fiber, it also can be loaded with lots of sugar and calories.  This is where label reading can help as the Washington Post did a story on granolas and found a single serving can range from one gram of sugar to 14 grams.  Another thing to look for are the words “added sugar” as the sugar from dried fruit is not bad for us (more calories for those watching) as is corn syrup or cane sugar.  However, do keep in mind that while honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar may be healthier, they still add empty calories.

Drinks such as sugared ice teas and flavored coffees also add a lot of sugar to our diets as do some sport drinks and vitamin waters so be sure to read the label.  If you want to avoid empty sugary drinks altogether, make flavored waters by adding fruit or vegetable slices.  Toss in some lime and cucumber slices to your water or a handful of berries, orange slices, or mint leaves; use your imagination.

MorningStar of Fountain Hills is a beautiful senior community that offers assisted living as well as memory care.  Our exceptional team is experienced in serving seniors and understands what it needed to provide our residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

In fact, all facets of our community were designed from the ground up to compassionately and professionally serve our residents and we start with 24/7 care managers and access to licensed nurses and certified medication care managers/QMAPs.  MorningStar’s care managers help our assisted living residents retain their independence by providing help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) including dressing, grooming, bathing, toileting and eating as well as other medical assistance.  These dedicated individuals were hired for their big hearts and a desire to serve seniors.

MorningStar’s medication care managers/QMAPs also play an important role based on statistics from a National Institute of Health study.  It reports that 40% of seniors aged 65 and older take five or more prescription medications, and 90% take at least one prescription. In addition, it found that 55% of those seniors are improperly taking their medications.  Our certified med managers oversee both the ordering and dispensing of medications to our residents.

For residents’ safety, our entire community is handicap accessible with wide doorways, spacious common areas and hallways, and each suite is equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms.  In addition, all 63 of our bright assisted living suites have a 24-hour Emergency Call System.   Our Reflections Neighborhood has 28 secure suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia and is designed to encourage our tender residents to easily and safely explore their spacious surroundings.

Finally, MorningStar wants you to know that during the coronavirus outbreak, our highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of our residents, their families and our staff; and we could not be more vigilant in our defensive approach. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), one out of every four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year and the majority of these falls occur at home.  In fact, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. There are several reasons why seniors are more susceptible to a fall and there are steps you can take to help decrease the likelihood of it happening.

Many elderly adults experience a general overall decline in their physical fitness resulting in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility that make them more susceptible to a fall.  Another common problem shared by many seniors is impaired vision.  This can make it more difficult to detect fall hazards such as steps, thresholds, and obstacles and changes in the ground.

Certain types of medications, especially the side effects, can cause drowsiness, dizziness or low blood pressure, which can all increase the risk of a fall.  Also keep in mind it is not just prescription drugs but over-the-counter medications can contribute to balance problems as well.  Other factors that make seniors more susceptible to falls are chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and arthritis as well as surgical procedures including hip or knee replacement.

The NIA recommends installing night lights in the hallways and bathrooms and to have a light switch and phone within reach of the bed.  Keep walkways free of clutter and avoid using throw rugs and area carpets.  Use hand rails when going up and down the stairs, and if you have a pet, make sure they are not underfoot.  In the bathroom, install grab bars in the tub and near the toilet, and use non-skid mats, strips, or carpet on all surfaces that may get wet.

At MorningStar of Rio Rancho, our loving assisted living and memory care community makes residents’ safety and wellbeing a priority.  We provide 24-hour care, a licensed nurse on call 24/7, and provide suites equipped with full, handicapped-accessible bathrooms, an emergency call system and more. Have Questions about MorningStar of Rio Rancho?

April 17, 2020 by Rena Phillips

If you are looking for senior living in Rio Rancho NM, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Rio Rancho. We understand for many seniors, assisted living is a new experience and that there are lots of questions in regard to how personalized care is managed and how much it will cost.

The MorningStar of Rio Rancho’s leadership team always welcomes phone calls and email inquiries regarding our community.  In addition, our website offers lots of resources regarding MorningStar Senior Living including our company’s history and philosophy as well as details on how we determine the individualized care each resident will receive.

Under our website’s FAQ section, we explain that our assisted living care is based on a thorough assessment of the resident’s medical history and personal preferences.  We learn this information by sitting down with the person, their family, and our Wellness Director before they move in.   From there, a care plan is created that is approved by both the resident and their family.  To ensure our residents’ needs continue to be met, we do schedule plan evaluations as well as update plans as needed.

Within our assisted living, we have five levels of care along with a wide range of auxiliary medical and non-medical services that are priced a la carte.  Care services determine a part of your monthly fee, but it is also based on the type of suite you choose within our choice of 51 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.  Square footage as well as location and views are additional factors in the overall monthly fee.

MorningStar of Rio Rancho also provides 26 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  The monthly fee in our memory care Reflections Neighborhood is all-inclusive at a one-package price for both the suite and care.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Rio Rancho, “to honor, to value, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to schedule a visit to see firsthand the finest senior living in Rio Rancho NM.
