HOW DO THERAPY DOGS HELP SENIORS?

December 22, 2023 by Rena Phillips in senior living

You see them in several environments, from the local shopping mall to a nearby municipal park. They often wear a colored vest while walking next to their human companion. Some of them visit schools, daycare centers, and assisted living facilities to spread joy to everyone who encounters them. At the MorningStar of Fountain Hills memory care facility, we have become acquainted with the therapy dogs that are companions for some of our residents.

Therapy dogs come from a handful of breeds, such as golden retrievers, German shepherds, and labrador retrievers. They spend considerable time, which often runs two years, learning how to interact with humans. For residents at our senior living center in Scottsdale, Arizona, one question is asked more often than other questions.

How do therapy dogs help seniors?

More Active

With a dog to take care of each day, seniors who live a mostly sedentary lifestyle immediately transform into active older adults. Like all dogs, therapy dogs require walks, as well as playtime at a dog or municipal park. Getting off the couch and walking a therapy dog improves your physical health by working out the cardiovascular system. Seniors also become more active by playing games with their therapy dogs such as fetch and tug of war.

Less Lonely

Research studies indicate that around 40 percent of seniors experience regular bouts of loneliness. This is especially true for seniors who have lost a spouse. Seniors who experience loneliness are more likely to develop the symptoms that are associated with depression and anxiety. The results of a study released in 2016 demonstrate pets provide the emotional support seniors need to fend off bouts of loneliness. A visit from a therapy dog can wash those lonely blues away.

Lower Blood Pressure

According to one research study, sitting down and petting a dog for a few minutes can lower your blood pressure by as much as 10 percent. The body reduces stress because the brain releases oxytocin, prolactin, and serotonin. It also reduces the level of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. Seniors who live with high blood pressure are at a much greater risk of developing health ailments such as strokes, as well as heart and kidney disease. Lowering blood pressure is the most effective strategy for preventing the development of those diseases.

Helps Fend Off Dementia

At our assisted living facility, we emphasize the importance of our residents remaining mentally active to prevent developing the signs of dementia. Playing interactive card games and working solo on crossword puzzles represent two ways to stay mentally fit. Another way to keep your brain sharp is to interact with a therapy dog. The company of a loving dog can improve cognitive functioning, as well as help seniors stay balanced and well-coordinated.

Learn More About Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have somewhat different roles than the roles covered by service dogs. Therapy dogs do more visits, such as visiting residents at our senior living center in Scottsdale, AZ. They are trained to provide emotional support for victims of violent crimes, as well as older adults who live alone. On the other hand, service dogs provide constant companionship by helping their human companions deal with disabilities like blindness and epilepsy. You can find therapy dogs roaming the halls of our assisted living facility at Fountain Hills as part of our monthly activities calendar. Learn more about therapy dogs and how they help seniors by scheduling a tour of our senior living center in Scottsdale, AZ.

Finding a Memory Care Community for a Loved One

November 13, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Searching for memory care for a loved one that suits the person’s needs as well as the family’s is challenging at best. Knowing the person is dependent on getting the level of care they need for both their wellbeing and safety makes choosing the right home essential. Experts say start by taking your time to think about your loved one’s needs including daily personal care required such as dressing, toileting, bathing, etc. as well as any on-going medical needs.

Additionally, do they have mobility issues and use a wheelchair or a walker; or do they need assistance eating? If the person is known to wander, you will want a secure home to keep him or her safe including alarms on the doors. Another thing experts say is to let the community know if the person is prone to angry outbursts or other aggressive behaviors.

Once you have a good idea of your loved one’s needs, now look at communities that are equipped to handle those needs. Ask about living arrangements, dining service, and the level of daily help the person will receive. Moreover, does the community offer exercise programs and other meaningful activities?

Now inquire about the homes’ experience with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, and the training the staff has in dementia care. What is the home’s philosophy of care and how do they approach difficult situations such as aggressive behaviors? Most of all do the staff seem caring and do residents appear to be content and well-looked after?

Receive the Care You Need at MorningStar of Fountain Hills

November 10, 2023 by Rena Phillips in assisted living

Does your elderly mom or dad dismiss the idea of assisted living fearing it would end their independence and life as they know it? Do they think assisted living homes are more like nursing homes of the past? We want to reassure you and your senior loved one that assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Fountain Hills are not nursing homes. In fact, we do not offer skilled nursing services but rather provide assistance with the ADLs (activities of daily living), along with engaging activities and other services intended to improve and enhance quality of life.

It is important to a senior’s overall health that they receive proper care as the website Aging.com reports, “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior's quality of life. Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.” In fact, studies show seniors getting assistance with the ADLs allows them to feel like they are in control of their life again and helps them regain a sense of self-worth and purpose.

At MorningStar of Fountain Hills, we know seniors have a lot to offer and the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon this truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Our beautiful community offers 63 graciously appointed suites for assisted living in a variety of floorplans. In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood provides 28 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

We also offer respite care for those recovering from surgery or an illness, as well as short-term stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. For memory care or assisted living Scottsdale area seniors and their families can count on, visit our website or contact us for further information.

Encourage Engagement and Self-expression in Those With Dementia

October 16, 2023 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Multiple studies report on the benefits of using music and art to improve the lives of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Experts explain they help encourage engagement and self-expression even in more advanced stages.

Professionals who work with Alzheimer’s patients say music seems to decrease agitation and improves behavioral problems common in the middle stages of the disease. Patients in later stages may even be able to sing a song they knew from childhood or tap a foot to the beat even after other forms of communication are difficult. Dancing or gently moving to a rhythm helps coordinate motor movements as well as allows the person to express emotions. Research shows “musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer's disease because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease.”

If you wish to use music to calm and soothe, choose peaceful, tranquil pieces. If you want to boost spirits and bring back happy memories, use livelier pieces. Experts say to turn off other distractions like a TV and close windows if there is outside noise. Music may be more enjoyable to the person if it is something they are familiar with from their earlier life.

Art can also be an outlet for self-expression and give a person with Alzheimer’s a sense of purpose and accomplishment in creating their own work. Experts recommended avoiding any project that seems childlike and demeaning. Use safe, non-toxic materials, and if they need, take their hand and guide it on the paper to get them started. Moreover, remember there is no need for the person to finish.

MorningStar of Fountain Hills is a trusted assisted living and memory care community which was awarded “Best of Senior Living” 2023 by A Place for Mom, an online referral service for families. Assisted Living Offers Many Benefits

September 27, 2023 by Rena Phillips in assisted living

For many families, assisted living is a new concept and they don’t know if it would meet their loved one’s needs. While services may depend on where you live, there are similarities regardless of your zip code. The first thing families should understand is assisted living is not skilled nursing care but rather intended for seniors who require a “helping hand” with daily care activities. Seniors need to understand assisted living does not take away their independence but rather enhances it.

Assisted living communities offer an environment to safely age in place while receiving an array of senior care services, companionship and programs to improve quality of life. Residents enjoy not having to worrying about home maintenance and yard work as well as preparing meals and driving. Assisted living communities are maintenance-free and provide meals and scheduled transportation to medical appointments or trips to area shopping and restaurants.

Another big benefit to assisted living is the resident no longer feels like a burden to their family. Now when a son or daughter comes for a visit, it is just that. There isn’t a list of chores to do or the need to help with personal care or meal prep but time can be spent enjoying one another.

When you are searching for assisted living, one of the services listed should include help with the ADLs (activities of daily life). ADLs include things like medication management, bathing, dressing, grooming, transference (help getting in and out of bed to wheelchair, walker etc.)  As an incoming resident, your loved one’s level of care will be based on the ADLs to create a Personalized Care Plan.

At MorningStar of Fountain Hills, we provide a full range of senior care and hospitality services, luxury amenities and wellness programs to engage residents physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially. For assisted living Scottdale/Fountain Hills seniors can count on, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Does Your Loved One Need Memory Care?

September 25, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

A Place for Mom’s website offers some advice to families regarding the need for memory care for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. They explain early-on in the disease, many individuals are capable of living independently with family members overseeing some of their care. However, they also warn symptoms can vary from day to day and it can be difficult to know exactly when a person requires more supervision for their safety and wellbeing.

Dr. Philip Branshaw, an internal medicine specialist in Batavia, Illinois, says when speaking to families, he centers the conversation regarding additional care for their loved one on the “ability to perform activities of daily living and safety.” ADLs include things like dressing, bathing, eating and toileting.

Other questions doctors may ask to evaluate a person’s ability to live on their own include: is he or she having trouble finding their way back home from familiar neighborhood routes? Are they forgetting to eat or drink and take medications? Is the person’s safety at risk? Have they left the stove on, have unexplained bruises, or had several falls recently?

Medical experts say it is important to let the person’s healthcare providers know as soon as you suspect a problem. They can do tests to rule out other conditions that may be causing the confusion or memory loss; and take a look at the person’s medications to see if they are the problem. Also, if a diagnosis is made early-on, the person has the chance to weigh-in regarding care options down the road.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Fountain Hills has 28 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Visit our website for more information about trusted senior living in the Scottdale area.

Children May Have Difficulty Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

June 12, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

When a grandparent or another close family member or friend suffers from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, it can be difficult for children to understand, especially if they are very close to the person.  Most likely they have questions and concerns regarding the disease and may be struggling with a range of emotions including sadness and confusion. They may not know how to act around the person anymore or be frightened by the “strange behavior.”

Having grandma or grandpa call you by mom or dad’s name or asking the same question again and again are just some of the strange things kids see happening to a beloved grandparent. They may worry Alzheimer’s is contagious and it is important they know it isn’t but rather a degenerative disease that happens in the brain. If the person lives with them, teenagers may be embarrassed to have friends around due to the person’s behavior, and sometimes children withdraw from the person or lose patience.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests sitting down with your child and telling them while the person may forget your name, they can still feel your love. Encourage questions and provide honest answers, and perhaps together you can learn more about the disease. The experts offer ideas on things kids can do with the person such as listening to music, setting the table, working on a puzzle, reading a book or looking at family photos. As the person’s disease progresses, make sure your kids feel comfortable asking more questions. Regardless of how old we are, losing a loved one to Alzheimer’s disease is challenging for everyone.

Finding Community and Connection in Senior Housing: A Guide for Older Adults

March 08, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Senior Housing

Even though senior housing communities are supportive, enriching environments, many older adults hesitate to participate in the social scene when they first move into senior housing.

If you feel uneasy about the social environment in your senior housing area, don’t worry. You are not alone. Follow this guide to improve your social life and connect with other residents.

Reflect on the Past

Looking back on your younger years as you move into senior housing might seem odd. However, this can be useful for finding your tribe in your new community.

You probably had to start your social life from scratch when you entered middle school, high school, college, or even new workplaces. Moving into senior housing is no different. You can apply some of the same strategies you used then to make new, long-lasting friendships now.

Remember what you learned about people’s personalities and habits back then. Are there any personality traits you want to avoid? What stood out to you when you met different people throughout your life?

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to look back and reflect on what you’ve learned.

Have a “Yes” Mindset

Start saying “yes” more!

Of course, there will be times when you have to say “no” to an activity, event, or gathering, but try to limit this as much as possible. Part of building a strong sense of community is trying new things while meeting new people.
Even if you don’t enjoy everything you try, you can store this knowledge for future use. You never know what you might gain from the experience of trying something new.

Pay Attention to Community News

Most senior housing communities have bulletin boards and other central areas for current news and events. Senior housing communities often host various recreational activities to encourage team building and socialization.

Pay attention to the upcoming activities in your community. These are great opportunities to connect with familiar and new people alike. You might meet your new best friends at the next art class or outdoor hike.

Keep an Open Mind

It can be difficult to adjust to a brand-new social scene, especially if you are used to your family or solo time. Keeping an open mind will help you break out of your shell and meet new friends.

Try not to judge anyone you meet at first glance. Getting to know someone’s heart and personality takes time, so give everyone a fair chance.

Find Your Tribe in Senior Housing

Follow these tips to improve your social life in senior housing. These tips work for almost any senior housing community in the country. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised by what — and who — you discover!

4 Helpful Coping Strategies for Seniors Moving to Assisted Living

March 06, 2023 by Rena Phillips in assisted living

Today’s assisted living communities are warm, welcoming environments that allow residents to explore their interests and bond with one another. However, finding senior housing can be a long process that brings up conflicting emotions.

Many seniors feel reluctant to leave behind their routines and worry that assisted living facilities will be restrictive. Here are some tips to pass on to your loved one so they can cope with the move to assisted living.

1. Spend Time with Family and Friends

Aging adults often worry that moving to assisted living will isolate them from their loved ones. To combat these fears and ease their minds, encourage them to spend lots of time socializing.

Personal interactions, whether with family members or close friends, protect against senior health problems. Socializing and connecting more deeply can help your loved one cope with their upcoming move.

2, Get to Know Your Senior Housing Community

You should inform your loved one of the amenities, benefits, and social events that come with their new senior housing community.

If they know what to expect, they are less likely to stress over the move. Show your loved one the assisted living community’s website or arrange for additional in-person visits before the move.

Many senior housing communities host welcoming gatherings to make new residents feel special and included. Check your assisted living facility’s website for more information.
3. Make a List of the Positives

Focusing on the positive aspects of moving to assisted living can get your loved one excited instead of worried.
Encourage your loved one to make a list of all of the amenities and positive things that they will enjoy once they move. You can help by reminding them about the following:

  • Swimming pools

  • Group fitness classes

  • Additional help around the house

  • Senior-focused medical care

  • Improved social health

  • Freedom and independence

  • Gorgeous scenery

These are just a few examples of what your loved one has to look forward to when they move into assisted living.
It’s not always as simple as telling them to “think positively,” but if you encourage your loved one to hone in on the benefits, they are less likely to stress over the stigma.

4. Practice Self-Care

Before your loved one moves into assisted living, help them arrange a self-care day. Engaging in self-care is one of the best coping strategies for any major life change. Seniors especially can benefit from taking time to care for their physical and emotional health.

Make Moving More Exciting with These Coping Strategies

You can help your loved one thrive before they get to move-in day. Encourage them to try these coping strategies to make their move to assisted living less scary and more exciting.

The Link between Hearing Loss and Cognitive Decline

March 06, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

According to the Medical News Today website, studies find hearing loss may contribute to social isolation, lower quality of life, disability, depression, and dementia. This can be especially problematic for people aged 80 years and older, who tend to have more advanced hearing losses.

In 2015, researchers reported on a 25-year study, which focused on a link between hearing loss and dementia. At the start of the study, the 3,670 participants were 65 years or older and followed for over 25 years. Using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to measure cognitive decline, researchers say there appeared to be a correlation between self-reported hearing loss and cognitive decline. However, participants who used hearing aids did not show a significant cognitive decline, suggesting the use of hearing aids may offer a protective effect.

Experts say hearing loss may adversely impact a person’s ability to socialize as they miss out on vital verbal and emotional information that may directly impair brain structure and function. Or it could be that the person uses more energy to make sense of what they hear; and reduces the energy they have left for memory, language processing and attention.

It is recommended at age 60, all adults get a baseline hearing test and be rechecked every couple of years, regardless of whether they experience symptoms. John Hopkins Medicine reports one in 3 adults over age 65 has hearing loss, but due to a gradual change in their hearing, they may not be aware of it.

Symptoms of age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, include the speech of others sounding muffled or slurred; high-pitched sounds, such as "s" or "th" being hard to distinguish; and having difficulty understanding conversation, especially if there is background noise. The person may notice men’s voices are easier to hear than women’s, because it is lower-pitched.

As You Age, Stretching Exercises Become More Important

March 03, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Health professionals say it is important to incorporate stretching exercises into your routine, especially the older we get as our flexibility naturally decreases. As joints become stiff, and tendons and ligaments tighten up, we become more susceptible to injuries as well as chronic pain and poor posture. In fact, studies show men’s flexibility drops sharply at around 70 years of age.

Stretching exercises are easy to learn, relatively easy to do, and should not take more than five to ten minutes. Urvashi Chogle, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, says the shoulders, hips, knees, and spine lose the most flexibility.  He explains, "This makes many everyday movements more difficult, such as reaching overhead, squatting, twisting, and bending over."

Of course before you begin any new stretching exercises, you need to consult with your healthcare provider. He or she may have suggestions on how to safely get started or direct you to your local community senior center or other organizations for classes. Additionally, the Internet has a lot of information on how seniors can improve their flexibility with stretching exercises done in a chair, standing up, or if you can, on the floor. Regardless of your level of fitness, these exercises should help improve your range of motion, flexibility and joint stiffness.

At MorningStar of Happy Valley, we offer seniors a carefree lifestyle to safely age in place with a range of care services, luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities. How to Address 4 Common Fears Aging Parents Have About Senior Housing

You love your parents, so it’s hard to see them worried, upset, or fearful. Unfortunately, this is the reality many adult children and caregivers face when they consider moving their parents to senior housing.
Luckily, there are steps you can take to prepare your loved ones to move into assisted living facilities. Here are four common worries about senior housing and how you can gently address them:

1. “My Family Will Forget About Me”

Many aging adults worry that moving into assisted living or other senior housing will cut them off from their loved ones.
The best way to address this fear is with honesty and compassion.
Acknowledge your parents’ fears with validating statements. You can say things like, “I understand your worries. I promise we will visit as often as possible.”

Of course, it’s important to follow through on these promises. Your parents need to know that you are not abandoning them but giving them the best possible care.

2. “I’ll Get Bored and Lonely”

Many elderly people struggle to keep up with friends and hobbies. Your parents might worry that moving into senior housing will seal the deal: They’ll be unoccupied for the rest of their days.

However, assisted living facilities offer residents many activities, hobbies, and gatherings. There are plenty of opportunities for socializing and exploring their interests.

You can ease your parents’ fears by taking them on a tour of the senior housing you are considering. Allow the residential staff to show them the wide array of activities and social opportunities they will have.

3. “I Won’t Have Control Over My Life Anymore”

Sadly, many aging parents feel that moving into senior housing will remove their autonomy.

Assisted living facilities are designed to give aging adults as many choices as possible. The goal is to assist seniors with daily tasks, not to control them.

Your parents may benefit from looking at assisted living brochures and websites. Explain how they will be cared for each day while emphasizing the autonomy they get to keep. The staff will be there to help your parents, not limit them.

4. “I’m Not Important Anymore; My Kids Are Getting Rid of Me”

A common worry among aging adults is that their lives have lost meaning, so their children are shipping them off to get away from them.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Reassure your parents that their lives are important to you, and they will receive much better care in senior housing. You aren’t abandoning them; you’re supporting them, just as they have supported you throughout your life.

Ease Your Parents’ Fears for a Smooth Transition

If you take the time to address your parents’ fears now, they will have an easier transition into senior housing. These fears are understandable, but they are not true. You will love your parents just as much in senior housing as you do now.

5 Important Questions to Ask While Touring Assisted Living Facilities

February 24, 2023 by Rena Phillips in assisted living

Making the transition into assisted living is an important life change that requires research and preparation. Whether you are looking into senior housing for yourself or a loved one, it is essential that you get as much information as possible.

This guide will help you choose the right assisted living facility to meet your needs. The following are 5 important questions to ask when touring assisted living facilities.

1. Who Are the Caregivers, and How Are They Trained?

When touring assisted living facilities, it’s important to find out about the people who will be caring for your loved one. Always ask who the caregivers are and what the hiring process is like.

How are caregivers trained? What type of credentials or experience do they have? This will help determine whether you or your family member will be in good care at the facility.

2. What Is the Ratio of Staff to Residents?

A common concern in senior housing is the ratio of staff to residents. Some assisted living facilities are severely understaffed, which means that every resident can’t possibly get all the care they need.

When touring an assisted living home, ask what the ratio of staff to residents is to ensure that there will be plenty of staff members who can care for your senior family member.

3. Are Rooms Private or Shared?

Every assisted living facility is arranged differently, and this can impact which facility you choose.
Are you looking for yourself or your loved one to retain some privacy and independence? If so, you will want an assisted living home that offers private rooms. If socializing and companionship are important, you may be interested in shared rooms.

Always ask about the living arrangements when touring a new facility to find out whether they are private or shared.

4. How Are Medical Concerns Addressed?

One of the most important aspects of senior housing is making sure that residents get the medical care they need. Older adults often have serious health concerns, such as heart disease or Alzheimer’s.

When touring an assisted living home, ask how the facility addresses such medical concerns. Are medical professionals on-site to attend to emergencies? Is transportation readily available to nearby medical facilities?
Knowing the answers to these questions will provide peace of mind that your loved one’s health will be in good hands.

5. What Recreational Activities Are Available?

Many people are worried that when their family member enters assisted living, they will become isolated or depressed. A way to avoid that is by having access to recreational activities.

When you tour a senior housing facility, inquire about its recreational options. Most assisted living communities offer activities like fitness routines, movie nights, and art classes.

Choosing the Right Assisted Living Facility

When touring senior housing facilities, it’s important to ask the right questions. Finding out about staffing, medical care, recreation, and more will help you choose the best assisted living home to meet your needs.

The Search for a Memory Care Community

February 15, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Once you have a good idea of your loved one’s needs, now consider if the homes you are looking at are equipped to handle those needs. Ask about living arrangements, dining service, and the level of daily help the person will receive. Moreover, does the community offer exercise programs and other meaningful activities?

Now inquire about the homes’ experience with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia, and the training the staff has in dementia care. What is the home’s philosophy of care and how do they handle difficult situations such as aggressive behaviors? Most of all does the staff seem caring and do residents appear to be content and well-looked after?

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Happy Valley offers 27 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is geared toward residents’ care from meaningful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. When Is the Best Time to Consider a Move to Senior Housing?

January 25, 2023 by Rena Phillips in Senior Housing

According to the American Health Care Association, almost one million adults in the U.S. live in assisted living communities. Assisted living communities can be beneficial for a wide variety of people, often providing a significant boost to any senior’s quality of life.

But how do you know when it’s the right time for you or a loved one to consider moving into senior housing?

Signs It May Be Time to Consider Senior Living

It’s often the best time to consider an assisted living community when you encounter certain signs. Some of those signs include:

  • Needing help with activities of daily living (ADLs)

  • Increasing forgetfulness

  • A need for socialization opportunities

  • A need for care coordination

  • Increased difficulty performing household chores

In general, when a person needs more help on a daily basis to comfortably and happily live, it may be time for a move.

Help with Activities of Daily Living

ADLs include mobility and hygiene, such as bathing, brushing teeth, and getting dressed properly. It also includes medication management, which can become increasingly difficult for seniors. Senior living homes offer help with all of these things and more.

Increasing Forgetfulness

Sometimes, it can be more difficult to remember things with age. Forgetting to take medications, change clothes, make doctor appointments, or even eat can become more common. If remembering daily tasks is proving to be a challenge, senior housing can be a helpful solution.

A Need for Socialization

People of any age can benefit from an increase in socialization opportunities. This includes meeting new friends and being surrounded by others who share similar experiences.

Senior living communities and homes offer activities designed to cultivate friendships and fun for residents, so if you or your loved one is lonely, bored, or both, a senior home may be the key.

A Need for Coordination of Care

It can easily become overwhelming to keep up with hospital stays, doctor visits, specialist appointments, and routine tests and exams. Between the costs and the transportation, it’s often stressful and confusing. Assisted living communities and senior homes coordinate care for their residents, lifting it all off their shoulders.

Increased Difficulty Performing Household Chores

Many people find it difficult to keep up with household chores, and seniors are no exception. If you find it’s becoming too taxing to tackle chores like vacuuming, laundry, cooking, and other household maintenance, a move to senior housing can be especially beneficial and convenient.

Is It Time to Move?

Senior homes are designed to ease the everyday burdens of residents and clear the way for fulfilling friendships and exciting lives during the golden years. If you find that many things are getting in the way of enjoying those retirement years, it may be a great time to consider moving to senior hsenior housingusing.

How to Make New Friends in Assisted Living Communities

January 23, 2023 by Rena Phillips in assisted living

One of the most important things you can do when you move into an assisted living facility or community is to make friends.

Socializing and becoming a part of a group is proving to be essential for residents of these communities. Research has shown that when seniors are socially healthy, participate in activities with friends, and belong to social circles in their communities, their mental and physical health improve dramatically.

So, with social health and friendship being so vital at these facilities, what can a person do to make friends when they arrive at their new home in an assisted living community?

Tips for Making Friends in Your New Home

One of the best things about these communities is that they offer many socialization opportunities that most people wouldn’t get otherwise. There are several easy things you can do to make friends easily and quickly in your new community:

Make Mealtime a Social Event

It’s always many peoples’ favorite time of the day: mealtime! Invite people you meet in your community throughout the day to join you for a meal in the dining room, and choose a time and a place to do so. You may find you’ve gathered a wonderful group of people who all had been searching for new friends.

Participate in Social Activities

The easiest way to initiate conversations with people is to engage in activities with them. This could be playing bingo, taking a shopping trip, going to yoga class, or other activities. Participating in community activities and events will also help you find others with similar interests.

Seek Out Other New Residents

Some of the best people to become friends with when you’re new are other new folks! Chances are good that you aren’t the only new resident, and other new residents are looking for friends, just like you are.

Get to Know the Staff

You will likely see many of the staff members of your community on a daily basis. Get to know them! Find out what their families are like, what interests they have, and what their dreams are. You may find someone who reminds you of yourself or who needs your valuable advice.

Be Patient with Yourself

Above all else, have confidence in yourself and your ability to make friends. Give yourself the grace you deserve, and try not to feel anxious if it takes you some time to connect with others. Adjusting to your new environment won’t happen in a day.

From Friends to Family

Keeping these simple tips in mind can make finding new friends in your community much easier and more rewarding. As you make connections with those around you, you will find yourself fitting in with your community before you know it. And along the way, you may find amazing people who will become your best friends — and even like family!
