Considerations to Make When Looking for Dementia Care

June 15, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Doctors diagnose dementia by the lack of two or more brain functions without loss of consciousness. Such as memory and language skills being significantly impaired. The loss of these functions directly inhibits the way an individual reacts with the world around them. While it is difficult for the individual to adjust to this new way of life, it is especially difficult for you as the caretaker to acclimate as well. A Dementia diagnosis comes with a large number of considerations to make in regard to your loved ones' care.

Individuals with dementia have significantly impaired brain functioning that interferes with normal activities and communication in relationships. People struggling with dementia lose their ability to solve problems and maintain emotional control. They may experience personality changes and behavioral problems, such as becoming easily angered, having delusions, and hallucinations. These symptoms can make it extremely difficult to handle if you yourself are the spouse of someone with Dementia, the child of, or a close friend of said person. The average person, while ambitious and caring, may not be equipped to handle the many needs of someone dealing with Dementia.

MorningStar at Englefield Green specifically cares for those aged 55 and older with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Since our facility at MorningStar at Englefield Green is specialized and more acclimated to the care of these individuals, we are able to personalize our care to each individual’s needs. The Difference Between Normal Aging and Dementia

June 13, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Experts say perhaps as many as 40 percent of adults over the age of 65 suffer from some level of memory loss, but are quick to add, it does not necessarily mean Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia. They explain there are some noticeable characteristics separating normal memory loss from dementia.

For instance, many older adults occasionally forget how to operate a piece of machinery or how to program a remote control if they have not done it in a while; but doctors say this is common and most-likely not a cause for concern. However, it is more concerning when a person forgets how to get home or how to perform routine tasks.

It is normal to have to pause and think how to communicate a thought or idea but it is not normal to forget what you just said and continuously repeat yourself, or to not be able to finish a thought. Another sign the problem is more serious than normal forgetfulness is using the wrong word to describe something or forgetting the name altogether; as is forgetting names of family and friends.

Another example of more than normal age-related forgetfulness is forgetting what an object is or what it is for. With normal memory loss, you may forget where you put your glasses; someone with Alzheimer’s may find their glasses and not recognize them as their own or forget they wear glasses. Experts caution even in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, people can have balance problems, and as the disease progresses, balance typically get worse. A study found people with dementia were “8-times more likely to fall than older people who have not been diagnosed with a form of dementia.”

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Happy Valley has 27 secure suites devoted to individualized care for those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages and supports their independence while keeping them safe.   If you have a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, please visit our website for more information about our experienced, compassionate memory care in Happy Valley, OR.

When Is It Time to Move a Parent to Memory Care?

May 27, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Dementia is a complicated disease that requires specialized care from trained, experienced, and dedicated staff. Despite the best intentions of family members, sometimes they are simply not equipped to provide the extensive care needed.

Memory care communities are designed to meet the needs of seniors with dementia and Alzheimers. But how do you know when it is time to transfer your loved one to memory care? These signs are strong signals that it is time to make the transition.

Safety Becomes a Concern

When seniors with dementia begin to experience symptoms daily, their safety can be in jeopardy. They may forget things like locking doors, turning off the stove, or taking medication.

If you notice your loved one forgets these important things, it is time to consider moving to a senior living community that can ensure their safety. Senior communities have dedicated staff that looks after residents to ensure they are out of harm's way.

Neglecting Personal Care

A telltale sign that your loved one with dementia requires more care is neglecting personal care. Unwashed clothes, body odor, or other personal hygiene issues can mean that your loved one forgets to care for themselves daily or has simply forgotten how to perform these tasks.

In a memory care community, your loved one will receive the daily assistance needed to ensure their personal care needs are met.

Neglecting Finances

We all may forget to pay a bill here and there at some point. But if your loved one is regularly late on bills or is receiving collection notices, it can put their financial stability at risk. In addition to issues with creditors, neglecting finances can mean that they are more susceptible to financial scams and fraud.

You Can No Longer Provide Adequate Care

It is common for family members to take on the role of caregiver for parents or loved ones with dementia. While this is a noble effort that can work in the short term, it is difficult for most people to provide adequate caregiving for the long term.

If you find yourself exhausted, neglecting yourself, or dropping the ball on caregiving duties, it is time to transition your loved one to a senior living community that can cater to their needs.

Your Loved One Is Lonely or Isolated

Seniors with dementia are more likely to develop feelings of loneliness or isolation which can make their symptoms worse and lead to feelings of depression. Loneliness and depression can also translate to negative physical symptoms.

Transitioning a loved one to a senior community will ensure that they have daily social interactions and access to activities that cater to seniors with dementia.

5 Simple and Engaging Activities for Dementia Patients

May 25, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Dementia patients and their families may go through tough times as they navigate the symptoms of the disease. However, that does not mean that seniors with dementia cannot live fulfilling lives. Activities are a good way to keep them engaged and stimulated while in senior living.

Appropriate activities are a fun way to spend time with loved ones, stay active, and even help mitigate some Dementia symptoms. Here are five simple and engaging activities for dementia patients:

1. Crafts

Crafts are a simple activity that can cater to all dementia patients, no matter how advanced the disease is. Simple crafts like molding clay or paper mache do not require any new skill-building or require seniors to draw on their memory.

Through crafts, seniors in memory care can benefit from the tactile stimulation and unleash the creative side of their brain. Crafts are also affordable and don’t require a lot of setup or takedown.

2. Create Collages

Collages are a fun way to produce something unique and keep seniors with dementia active and interested. Cutting out images from magazines, newspapers, or even old books and making them into something new is a stimulating activity that doesn’t take a lot of effort or commitment.

For seniors with advanced dementia, selecting the photos without cutting or gluing can give them a sense of independence and autonomy. Collage creation can be done independently or with the help of a caregiver or family member.

3. Looking Through Old Photos

Not all activities with dementia patients need to involve creating. Looking through old photos in photo albums, yearbooks, or even old magazines is an easy way to reminisce about old times while making new memories. Sometimes old photos can trigger a memory or lead to stories that are fun for everyone involved.

4. Explore the World Through Technology

Seniors with dementia often lose the ability to travel like they used to. But that doesn’t mean they can’t explore new places. Landmarks and unique facilities around the world offer live streaming options that allow anyone with an internet connection to explore.

Zoos, nature preserves, aquariums, and even art museums offer live streaming as well as live tours. Watching this content can be a fun way to spend time with others in senior living communities.

5. Puzzles

Puzzles are a common and recommended activity for seniors in memory care. Simple puzzles like matching shapes and colors are intuitive and don’t require seniors to draw on their memory. Completing puzzles can build a senior’s confidence and keep them motivated and engaged.

Learn More About Shingles

May 13, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk for getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone the chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a wash cloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

After a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

March 17, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

When a person is told they have Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, it is extremely difficult not only for the individual but the entire family. As it generally comes after the person as well as their family and friends have noticed a marked change in the individual, it is tough to hear but not always a huge surprise. Now the question becomes “what next?”

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers families guidance with a list of helpful informative and supportive resources including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Check if they have local chapters where you can get in-person support, meet others in your same situation, and get involved in fundraising activities. You can additionally reach out to local community centers and hospitals to find out if they have Alzheimer’s educational programs.

NIA reminds families to keep up with regular medical checkups as they are important for a person with Alzheimer’s and should include their primary healthcare provider and specialists such as a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and geriatric psychiatrist. Also ask your medical team if there is a memory disorder clinic nearby.

Another suggestion is to plan ahead both financially and for long-term care while the person can still have some valuable input. Finally, experts say to make sure you get the proper help to ensure the person’s wellbeing and safety.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Happy Valley, we know something about the pain and devastation families go through with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a dedicated, compassionate team and provides a safe, loving home for seniors suffering from dementia.  If you are looking for trusted seniors living in Happy Valley, OR, please visit our website for more information.

Could Mom or Dad Benefit from Assisted Living?

February 11, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

If you are worried about an elderly parent who lives alone and may not be getting the kind of personal daily care, meals, or company they need; it may be time to consider assisted living.  At MorningStar of Happy Valley, we specialize in providing care for seniors who need a little help with their day-to-day personal care activities but do not require 24-hour medical care.

We have seen first-hand how the transition to assisted living eases the stress of either or both the senior’s life or the family caregiver’s life.  Moreover, we recognize that senior living at its best allows residents to not only survive but to thrive.  We achieve this with a wide range of care services, fine dining, and meaningful wellness programs and activities.  In addition, residents enjoy built-in companionship as they make new friends with fellow residents and our truly loving staff.

To give families a good idea of what services are provided with assisted living, we are happy to answer questions.  Also, we suggest you take a look at our website where you will find a lot of information.  A good place to start is our Decision Guide under the “First Steps” tab.  Here we go over things to look for that may indicate your parent needs more help such as recent falls, unexplained weight loss, poor balance, and/or poor personal hygiene.   From there, take a look at our FAQs for more details.

Under our “Wellness” tab we go over our dining services, life enrichment programs, and clinical care services.  We also like to direct interested families to “Our Heart” to read a little background on how MorningStar Senior Living began and what its mission and precepts are all about.

While you will discover our company was founded on Judeo-Christian tradition, we honor all faith systems and worldviews as we believe it is our responsibility to respect residents’ spiritual preferences.  In fact, our goal is to meet a resident’s social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs as part of creating a comfortable home and compassionate care.

MorningStar of Happy Valley provides the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create an atmosphere that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  Please contact us to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care.

The Value of Music & Art for those with Alzheimer’s Disease

January 14, 2022 by Rena Phillips in Memory care

Multiple studies report on the benefits of using music and art to improve the lives of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Experts explain they help encourage engagement and self-expression even in more advanced stages.

Professionals who work with Alzheimer’s patients say music seems to decrease agitation and improves behavioral problems common in the middle stages of the disease. Patients in later stages may even be able to sing a song they knew from childhood or tap a foot to the beat even after other forms of communication are difficult. Dancing or gently moving to a rhythm helps coordinate motor movements as well as allows the person to express emotions. Research shows “musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer's disease because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease.”

If you wish to use music to calm and soothe, choose peaceful, tranquil pieces. If you want to boost spirits and bring back happy memories, use livelier pieces. Experts say to turn off other distractions like a TV and close windows if there is outside noise. Music may be more enjoyable to the person if it is something they are familiar with from their earlier life.

Art can also be an outlet for self-expression and give a person with Alzheimer’s a sense of purpose and accomplishment in creating their own work. Experts recommended avoiding any project that seems childlike and demeaning. Use safe, non-toxic materials, and if they need, take their hand and guide it on the paper to get them started. Moreover remember there is no need for the person to finish.

MorningStar of Happy Valley is one of the most trusted assisted living and memory care communities just outside Portland. Our holistic memory care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation. A resident’s day is filled with meaningful activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents. Please visit our website to learn more about senior living, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.
