Everyday Tips to Help You Stay Your Healthiest Best as You Age

March 08, 2019 by Rena Phillips in senior living

As we grow older, experts say there are some relatively simple changes we can do to help make the process smoother, and remind us it is never too late to adopt healthier habits. They suggest four main areas to focus on that will make a difference in our overall health.

First, multiple studies have shown that taking care of our emotional health is important. Many older adults suffer from chronic health conditions (80% have at least one and 50% have two or more) including heart disease or cancer, which can put seniors at risk for depression. When a person’s emotional health suffers, it can negatively impact other aspects of their health. In fact research shows a link between depression and social isolation to “digestive problems, heart failure and weakened immune systems.” Thus it is important for seniors to reach out for help if they feel depressed and to participate in activities that give their lives purpose and maintain or develop social connections.

The next area to focus on is exercise. Experts say we should look at exercise as more than a way to get stronger and/or to lose weight. Exercise provides a whole range of benefits including helping to boost immunity and preventing muscle loss, as well as improving blood flow and strengthening the brain.

Another suggestion is to take better care of our hair and skin. Good skin care can help to avoid infections and should include washing with a mild soap while taking care not to “over wash” and moisturizing daily. Also apply sun screen whenever you go outdoors.

The last area to focus on for better health is nutrition. Did you know that millions of seniors suffer from malnutrition? One of the problems facing the elderly is that as we age, appetites decrease so getting all the nutrients the body requires is challenging. Seniors need to keep in mind that it is not just about how much you eat but what you eat. One thing that appears to help seniors eat better is to make eating a social affair.

At the MorningStar of Rio Rancho assisted living and memory care community, we make this easy as residents eat nutritional, tasty meals together in our charming dining room. We provide seniors the opportunity to socialize as much as they want by participating in group enrichment activities and wellness programs that stimulate the mind, body and spirit. Assisted Living May Help Keep You Healthier & Safer

March 08, 2019 by Rena Phillips in senior living

Since most assisted living communities offer access to 24-hour personal care, along with nutrition and wellness services targeted specifically for the needs of older adults, they may present healthier, safer options for some seniors so says A Place for Mom. Residents are able to enjoy healthy social connections as well as peace of mind knowing the support they need to help maintain their independence is available 24/7.

In fact new research suggests that the support services and programs provided by assisted living communities help seniors to avoid many of the mishaps and problems that are commonplace in the elderly. One such problem way too common in seniors it failing to take medication as prescribed. Skipped doses or too much medication can result in deadly consequences. The Department of Health and Human Services reports that up to 55 percent of older adults are “non-complaint” with their prescription drugs orders, and many are hospitalized each year due to adverse reactions.

Dehydration is another commonplace problem experienced by the elderly. As we age, our sense of thirst diminishes, which means older adults need to remember to drink even when they are not thirsty. Also some medications may be diuretic, while others cause a person to sweat more, which can result in dehydration.

In addition poor nutrition is one more problem many seniors face. Some research even suggests loneliness is a significant predictor of malnutrition in the elderly. It can be difficult for older adults who live alone to prepare good, nutritional meals or for their loved ones to supervise daily eating habits.

At senior living communities such as MorningStar of Happy Valley, we provide the support services and physical environment to help older adults live as comfortably and as safely as possible. All of our assisted living suites are equipped with full handicap-accessible bathrooms. Furthermore residents are served three, delicious meals a day tailored to the changing health needs of older adults. Also we provide 24/7 Care Managers, licensed nurses, scheduled Health & Wellness Evaluations and Care Plan reviews, and medication management by Certified Med Care Managers. Our Leadership Team is Setting the Bar for Extraordinary Care

March 07, 2019 by Rena Phillips in senior living

As one of the area’s most distinctive senior living communities, MorningStar of Happy Valley will offer a ‘true home’ to area seniors in need of assisted living and memory care. Our community is scheduled to open in late 2019 and is conveniently located three miles from Interstate 205 to the southeast of Portland.

Set within a picturesque, affluent residential neighborhood, we are pleased to bring our dedicated, loving care to the area. To set the tone for our unwavering commitment to residents, MorningStar of Happy Valley already has an extraordinary leadership team in place. Headed up by Executive Director, Quinn Crandall, who says while growing up, he always empathized with those around him that were weaker and more vulnerable and went out of give way to give love and encouragement. As a young man, his work background included working with inner city youths. Once he discovered the world of senior living, he immediately knew it was a good fit for his service. He quickly discovered that nothing gives him more satisfaction than being able to meet the needs of seniors.

Another critical component to Happy Valley’s leadership team is Julie O’Neil, our Director of Community Relations. She shares that she always enjoyed spending time with her grandparents and appreciated the way they taught her at a young age to respect and love others, act with kindness, and learn to laugh – even at yourself. Julie loves working for a company like MorningStar that espouses the same value that she learned from her elders growing up – honoring God, valuing seniors, and serving others.

Now that our onsite Information Center is open, we look forward to meeting area seniors and their families. Please visit our website for contact information and directions to what is sure to be one of the area’s finest senior living communities.
